Low Memory

    Hi,

After migrating to Symantec End Point Protection for Small Business 12.0 I keep getting a warning about low system memory and in general my server is struggling (although it meets all the hardware requirements).

I am running SBS2003 and have 3GB of RAM installed in a dual quad core box.

    Problems I am seeing

    - 9 x SAVFMSesp.exe process each consuming about 100mb of RAM each
    - SMSUtilityServices.exe consuming 187MB of RAM
    - dbsrv9.exe consuming 223 MB of RAM
    - SAVFMSetask.exe consuming 67MB of RAM
    - SemSVC.exe using 111MB of RAM

As you can imagine the total RAM being used by Symantec is monstrous at the moment.

I have modified SAVFMSesp.exe to run 3 processes instead of 9.

I have found a great article on reducing memory usage of dbsrv9.exe

    http://news.support.veritas.com/connect/forums/dbsrv9exe-memory-usage

But none of this applies to 12.0 as the database management stuff is hidden - is there anyway to unhide?

Are there any further tips on fine tuning this that apply to version 12.0?

    Many Thanks

    Asim

Please upgrade to this latest build of SEP SBE 12 12.0.1001.95 and let us know the status.

    Hi Asim,

Several of the processes that you mention have nothing to do with SEP SBE 12.  SAVFMSesp.exe and SMSUtilityServices.exe are from Symantec Mail Security for MS Exchange.  Please do make sure that you are runnign the latest release of that product: most likely, it's SMSMSE 6.0.10.   If you are reducing scan processes and VSAPI Scanning threads in that product, please make sure that it is done so correctly: Calculating the Number of Scan Processes in Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 5.x and 6.x  Then, definitely monitor for any trouble with mail flow!

Just judging from my SBS box: 3GB is not a lot of RAM.  Mine gets by on 4GB.  Performance improved after I removed or disabled several built-in SBS components that were not needed in my organization (WSUS, SharePoint, etc).

Be sure to let the forum know of your progress!

    Thanks and best regards,

    Mick

    Thanks for the info guys,

Made a wee typo in my initial post - we are running 4GB of RAM in the server.  Also we are already running the latest version - 12.0.1001.9.

We have recently migrated from Sophos where we had their Control Center, AV and Antispam software all on our SBS server - the difference in RAM usage is causing problems.  Since turning down the number of threads used by SMSME things are better (mail is flowing fine) - but is there any other way fine tuning the memory usage in the other processes? or is that all I can do?

    Hi Asim,

I'm glad to hear that things are running better now.  To answer your question in brief: SEP SBE and SMSMSE self-manage themselves.  The latest versions typically do not consume much paged pool and cause a relatively small memory impact.  I have found the burden they place on a server to be relatively light in comparison to what Exchange consumes, for instance.

    Here is a good article:

Best Practices document for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange on Microsoft Small Business Server

The following may also have some intereting info (though I know you are not on SEP 11.... )

Best Practices documents for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 on Microsoft Small Business Server 2003

Please let the forum know if this answers your query!  And do check back with the forum or call Symantec's Technical Support for any future needs.

    Thanks and best regards,

    Mick

Any other processes eating up power?  If so did you look at those processes to see what they are and kill them if they are not needed.
    Good luck.

    Hi,

Please run ProcessMonitor. Make sure that you choose the CPU cycles as the column.

Then you can monitor the resources with that tool.

Look for Memory Consumptio or CPU Cycle consumption.

Then you can go to the properties of the process and see what files are running inside it or what is the location/name of that file.

How much memory are the "store.exe" and "sqlserv.exe" processes taking up? We also use SBS2003 and found that these can get very high and have gone through some steps to limit them. Not sure if you have but if they're taking up a lot of memory on your machine then I could point you towards some articles explaining how to reduce how much they use.

Any other processes eating up memory?  If you kill those does the server get faster?

For what it's worth, the link in Asim Ali's original post is now broken.  I'm pretty sure this is the same information....
