OK I am seriously at a loss here

I have an unmanaged Symantec Endpoint Protection client here that is getting this error every time he tries to use live update.

The first 12 catalog files download successfully with no problems and I have verified their contents.

On the 13th catalog file, it just sits there for a long time until eventually it says "Unable to connect to server" and gives me this LU1814 error.

I checked the LiveUpdate log files for the file in question that fails:

    http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com/symantec$20security$20content$20a1$2d64_microdefsb.curdefs_symalllanguages_livetri.zip

I then tried downloading the file manually using IE, and was able to download/view it no problem.

I've checked the Windows firewall (Symantec one is not installed), and none of the LiveUpdate processes nor URLs are being blocked.  Heck, I turned the firewall OFF and tried it, same deal.

I'm really running out of ideas here...

    Help!

Oh, and this is a 32-bit Windows 7 Business Ed PC running SEP 11.0.6000.550.

You can try the following solutions:

Error: "LU1814: LiveUpdate could not retrieve the update list" (Enterprise)
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH101808

Ran the repair and that didn't work

Sadly, I've also run through both of those KB articles mentioned to no avail...

    open control pannel, open liveudpate

    make it inetractive,

    start -- run - type luall.exe

download components one by one check if that downloads all of them..

Unfortunately, I can't even get to the point where I can choose what to download.  It fails on the step before that.

    remove liveupdate

    delete liveupdate folders

    install liveupdate from here

    tp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us.../liveupdate

do a repair of SEP, then run liveupdate

Just finished the reinstall/repair as you suggested, Rafeeq

    It didn't fix the problem...

I tried what was suggested here, and unfortunately it was a no-go.  To be perfectly honest this is not what I am seeing in my case.

Below is the relevant portion of the LiveUpdate log (originally posted, so this is the newest attempt):

seems like u have proxy server or firewall which is stopping the download, can you check this document?

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH94552&locale=en_US

and also check if these files are blocked by firewall using the setting.

In my original post, I mentioned that I had already tried turning turning the local firewall off.  That said, the only other firewall on the network is the one in the SonicWall router which cannot be turned off.

On a further note, if it was a firewall, then the LiveUpdate download would fail on the FIRST catalog file, not the 13th (after 12 successful downloads).  I just tried LiveUpdate with the local firewall off, just in case I missed something the first 2 times, and still got the same result.

Yes I did, to a letter, and before I first posted here.

I should also mention that I stated in my original post that I was able to download the problem file using IE, an idea I got from this document.

did you ever get this resolved?  I am having the same issue and after performing all this, I can sometimes get the manager to update but then it never updates again.  I just updated to the lastest MR from 11.0.6005 to 11.0.6300 and still the same. I have removed LU, reinstalled, repaired, updated, etc. etc.  I'm getting quite tired of this happening and not finding the fix.
