LUA fails downloading SEP 12 RU2 Defs...works manually

Created: 22 Apr 2013 | 10 comments

Here is the error I get repeatedly...

Another task is currently in progress and it is not possible for two tasks to copy to the local download directory at the same time.

I have SEP 11 tasks that run with no issue. 11 distributions with no issues. The server was just built 3 days ago with LUA 2.3.2. Why can't I automatically update the SEP 12 definitions. Catalog is updated also.

Nothing else is downloading during the failure. Anyone seen this before?

Hi PFUNK2803,

There's probably already a SEP 12.1 RU2 download task in progress.  Open up your Activity Monitor and see.  If so, it's probably best to cancel it and start a new one.

Please update this thread with your progress!  &: )

All the best,

Mick

With thanks and best regards,

Mick

I have it set for 2 hours to update...as well as my download for SEP 11 and SMSfE. All distributions and other downloads are fine.

I don't show anything running when it fails. Again...if I run it manually it works fine.

Does Activity Monitor show every job as completed or is there one that is In Progress?
Restating the server will probably fix it if there is one old job that is still not complete.

So here is an update. Sometimes it completes...sometimes it doesn't. Now my SEP 11 download failed. I noticed this entry.

Download job from source server Symantec LiveUpdate has completed successfully. There were 6 product(s) for which updates were found as part of this job.

I don't have anything labeled Symantec LiveUpdate...why is this here and where is it coming from?

Hi PFUNK2803,

That sounds normal to me.  Here's an excerpt from my own Event Log:

4/25/2013 21:54:12 IST  Download  informational  Admin  Download job from source server Symantec LiveUpdate has completed successfully. There were 71 product(s) for which updates were found as part of this job.
4/25/2013 20:25:13 IST  Download  informational  Admin  Started download of content for request id 230 started by user Admin.

Have you configured that LUA server's connection settings yet?  That will likely resolve your download issues if size and timeouts ar ethe cause of the failures.  Here's an article:

LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x Server Connection Recommendations

Also: here's where "Symantec LiveUpdate" is coming from.

Please update this thread with additional news!  LUA 2.x is a great product, when used and tuned correctly. We'll get yours working right for you.  &: )

Ah...forgot about that download.

So...I have the Symantec LiveUpdate, 3 downloads for SEP 11, SEP 12RU2, SMSfE, and 11 distributions for our global DC's. The downloads and distributions are all on timer for 2 hour updates. I am going off our previous server settings which seemed to work fine. However I did not set the previous server up and have only been working with our SEP system for 2 months...previous admins left a while back for other positions outside my company.

I have changed the retries and timeouts due to distance between sites and latency. That seems to work fine for all my distributions.

The downloads fail randomly. Sometimes they work...sometimes they don't. It is very hit and miss. Most errors refer to the original post. I believe this is downloads running at the same time and stopping each other. Almost like trying to start 2 at the same time.

Previously the LUA was configured to download every 90 minutes...but that was only SEP 11 updates. Now we have added the SEP 12 and SMSfE downloads. I may push the timing of this back to 3 hours...or maybe schedule for a specific time each day.

Cheers for the update!

Go for every 4 hours (1 PM, 5 PM, etc) - be sure the LUA has been restarted after changing the lua_static config.  Let us know how you get on!

With thanks and best regards,

Mick

Error in obtaining write lock while commiting updates.

Checked the logs and I am getting the above. It looks like the Symantec LiveUpdate is fighting my download of SEP updates. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

I combined all my downloads into 1 and that minimized the treachery but this continues still. The LiveUpdate apparently has priority in most instances...or at least it is running over the download.

What other ideas does everyone have?
