LUAU for OS X - No Virus Definition Updates found for a Week
Created: 15 May 2012 | 4 comments
We are running LUAU for OS X (v2.1.1) on a Leopard server (scheduled to download updates daily) as an internal LiveUpdate server for Mac OS X clients - this has been working without a hitch for years. Clients systems are now reporting that their virus definitions were out of date. When I run LUAU, I get the following at launch:
Symantec servers last checked: May 15, 2012 at 07:39 AM
Last new updates downloaded: May 08, 2012 at 05:02 AM
So LUAU is checking fo updates, but no new updates are found. When I manually "Download LiveUpdate packages now", the progress is reported as follows:
Running DownloadLiveUpdatePackages 2.1.1 to retrieve updates
Checking for a new version of LiveUpdate Administration Utility at:
ftp://update.symantec.com
There is no newer version of LiveUpdate Administration Utility at this time.
Downloading livetri.zip from ftp://update.symantec.com
NOTE: Files will be downloaded from: ftp://update.symantec.com
Extracting liveupdt.tri
Searching liveupdt.tri for Macintosh updates - this may take a minute
Checking Macintosh entry: 270 of 270
Finished search.
NOTE: There are no new Macintosh updates matching your criteria at this time.
Verifying preferences...
Press return to go back to the main menu.
No errors. Our firewall has not been changed, but checked it anyway and no errors/blocks there either. According to Symantec website for LiveUpdate, the most recent Mac definitions are dated 5/14. Our licensing is current.
What am I missing?

Hello,
What version of Symantec Antivirus for Macintosh are you running on the your Leopard Server?
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH95628
The Last Virus Definitions Released for Symantec Endpoint Protection for Macintosh 12.x was on 5/15/2012

Secondly, In reference to your issue, I would request you to check these 2 Articles:

Are your Macs running SAV 10, SEP 11 or SEP12.1?
If they are still running SAV Mac 10, time to upgrade.
If your Macs have to rely on an internal source for definition updates, time to move to LUA 2.3.1 that will run on a PC. LUAU is ancient history.
Do your Macs have unfettered internet access? If so, let them get defs from Symantec's LU servers.
Just my 2 cents worth.

We are running SAV 10 on all clients and manage using the SACM console (hosted on the same Leopard server as LUAU). I have not moved forward to SEP because I don't prefer to buy a Windows server to run the Administration software. Rather than suggestions as to how/why I should/must upgrade, any ideas as to why definitions are available, but are not downloaded (without any indication of errors) by LUAU?
You may want to check these logs to see if there's any more info or errors:
/Library/logs/LiveUpdateAdminUtility.log
/(LUAU download folder)/DownloadSession.log
You may also want to see if your preferences were somehow changed, as far as what to download. I wonder if one of the downloads is broken... Oh, just occurred to me. How does the hard drive space look on this server? Don't know if this applies: Mac OS X Server runs out of disk space after installing Symantec Antivirus (SAV) 10 for Mac (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH103426)
Good luck,
