MAC OS X and Linux

Our school district if undergoing some changes. Those changes may include MAC's and Linux based boxed. My question is this. If we go to these operating systems what can we expect with Deployment Server? Can we package or push software to these OS's. If anybody has any experience with these please let me know. Thanks.

You will still be able to

You will still be able to package and push software, but you may have a problem imaging the MAC OS X computers without an apple server. The MACs do not do well with the whole having to boot to PXE, so you have to have a go between of an Apple server.

I'm not familiar with using

I'm not familiar with using Deployment Server to push down Linux systems to machines, but I would think it'd be easier to just use the systems native package manager for installing/removing software that would go out and find the package, download it, and install it. Its a one liner for both Redhat and Debian based systems

yum install "something"

or

apt-get install "something"

substituting "something" for the package name. And if I'm not mistaken, I believe you can remotely install packages through Redhat's Webpanel.

In fact the more I think about it, I would only use deployment solution for pushing the image down. Both Debian and Redhat based distros have methods for automating an install. Redhat's is called "anaconda" and allows you to set nearly everything.

Yep

Yar. Also, you can perform a scripted installation of the Linux OS ala the Scripted Windows Installation provided you have PXE working.

You can create a .PKG file for a Mac and provided you can connect to the Mac hosting it or get a copy on Altiris, then you can copy it from the Deployment Server to the Client Machine via the Copy File to protocol inside of the Job Pane.
