Mailbox will not archive?

Created: 06 Jun 2013 | 22 comments

Running Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 CU2

Provisioning goes fine, mailbox synchronizes successfully, however, when running the archiving task, I get the following error in Event Viewer:

Log Name:      Symantec Enterprise Vault
Source:        Enterprise Vault
Date:          6/6/2013 4:09:03 PM
Event ID:      8390
Task Category: Archive Task
Level:         Error

User:          N/A
Computer:     Description:
The EnterpriseVault.DirectoryConnection object reported an error.

Exception occurred.

CDirectoryConnectionObject::GetArchiveFolder2

As well, in the archiving report, it state "Warning:Failed to process Mailbox" - Passes of mailbox "4"

Any ideas?

Is this just for one mailbox or all?  Could you grab a dtrace of a run now against one of the problem mailboxes?

SKTAG's picture

Well, jsut one as we are 'preproduction' - I was just getting ready to roll out, so only had my own mailbox enabled.  Would you happen to know what dtrace #'s I would need to produce the right report?

TonySterling's picture

You can type VIEW from the dtrace prompt.  Do AgentClientBrokeer and ArchiveTask.

Tony, here is it - not really sure what I am looking for!

The following lines from the log seems suspicious to me:

466	19:16:33.949 [4512]	(ArchiveTask)	<6720>	EV:M	{AgentMessageDispenser::ActivateObject:#3700} An error that we don't specifically recognise has occurred, [0x80020009], so we'll just increment this messages retry count.

717	19:16:37.350 [4512]	(ArchiveTask)	<3124>	EV:M	{AgentMessageDispenser::ProcessNextMessage:#1048} Processing MSMQ message body (ActivateObject) failed with [0xc00408e2]. The retry count will be incremented, and the message reposted to the end of the queue.

Can you:

  • confirm if the mailbox vault store is not in Backup mode?
  • try archiving another mailbox and see if the issue persists?
  • try moving the archive task to another EV server and see if you can archive from there (so to see if we can bypass the MSMQ errors)?

Hope this helps!

Oh, BTW, can you try manually archiving an item from the mailbox and see if that succeeds?

Can you verify your version of Exchange?  Also, is the Deployment Scanner clean?  and finally, if you run in report mode does it generate a report?

SKTAG's picture

Tony - Version of Exchange is 2010 SP2.  Deployment scanner was clean last time I ran it, but will rerun.  It does generate a report, will post when I'm back in the office.

Empty - I will try archiving an item from the mailbox tomorrow (I have verified I can restore from the mailbox).  Backup mode is not on, and because this is preproduction, I do not have anther mailbox that I can archive as a test (though I've been tempted!), and am only running one EV server, so don't have another to try it from.

I'll post back the results tomorrow when I'm back in the office - appreciate both of you taking the time to look!

OK, so the answers to your questions - Archiving an email from my mailbox manually appears to work (throws no errors, appears with the 'archived' symbol beside  - however, event log on EV server states:

Log Name:      Symantec Enterprise Vault
Source:        Enterprise Vault
Date:          6/7/2013 7:38:16 AM
Event ID:      3427
Task Category: Archive Task
Level:         Error

Computer:      Description:
A user's archive request has failed.

Mailbox:EDITED Folder: Inbox

Task: Exchange Mailbox Archiving Task for Error: Exception occurred.  (0x80020009)

Deployment Scanner comes back clean, backup mode is off

It does generate a report if I run it in report mode:

<Status>2</Status><ExchangeServer>EDITDP</ExchangeServer><DomainName>EDITED</DomainName><SiteName>EnterpriseVault</SiteName><StartTime>130150875661612340</StartTime><EndTime>130150875980320000</EndTime><RunType>0</RunType><RunMode>1</RunMode><RunID>RunNow_20130607_080606</RunID><TargetedMailboxes>1</TargetedMailboxes><ItemsArchived>0</ItemsArchived><ItemsArchivedSizeKBytes>0</ItemsArchivedSizeKBytes><Completed>0</Completed><QueuedMailboxes>0</QueuedMailboxes><NoActionTaken>0</NoActionTaken><Warning>1</Warning></Information>

Aditionally - added another Test mailbox, provisioned, synchronized, enabled - same error on that mailbox - does not archive

Rob.Wilcox's picture

Is there any more detail on the warning that is shown in your report?

SKTAG's picture

Unfortunately not - very ambigous errors, and all errors have been included in the above posts

TheEmptyMind's picture

Can you try repairing EV installation, especially given that you are not running production yet?  Error code 0x80020009 in the trace log seems suspicious to me.

SKTAG's picture

How do I repair EV installation?  Do you mean unistall/reinstall?

TheEmptyMind's picture

Try running setup.exe on top of the existing installation.  The installer will treat as an upgrade, stop the services and will reinstall bunch of runtime components and other pre-requisites.  Let us know how it goes.

TheEmptyMind's picture

If you are running on VMs, please take a snapshot/backup of EV server and DB, so if something doesn't work out, you can always restore back.

SKTAG's picture

One potentially BIG thing that I did not mention - seems to me as if this started failing when we moved our Exchange servers to a different data center - IP's/names did not change, jsut moved the vmares to a different data center.....................

TheEmptyMind's picture

Can you try removing Exchange domain and re-adding in EV console?

TheEmptyMind's picture

I will note though that your archiving task didn't have a problem locating the Exchange server based on the dtrace you provided.

TonySterling's picture

So it was working and now it isn't?

Do you have the an entries in the host file or use the DS Server registry key?

GabeV's picture

Can you remove the EV properties from the mailbox using EVPM? This entry on the dtrace is saying that the archiving task is having issues reading the folder settings on this mailbox:

412	19:16:33.918	 [4512]	(ArchiveTask)	<6720>	EV:H	{CFolderHelper::GetFolderSettings} HRXEX fn trace : Error [0x80020009], [..\AgentsCommon\FolderHelper.cpp, lines {367,419,424,432,435,507,820}, built May  1 01:59:28 2013].

Follow this technote:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH35614

After that, run the provisioning task and enable the mailbox for archiving again.

is anything else needed on this issue?
