Managing changes to production environments
As our company grows, we find our environment becoming more and more dynamic with changes to ensure a working environment for our users.
As it stands we have many people in IS making many changes to the production environment. Some that will last month’s, such as slow deployments. Because of the growth of our company, we have been losing communication with the changes which are causing change conflicts.
I was wondering from a general perspective, how teams and techs communicate changes to the production environment with the rest of the teams.
We have tried emails and helpdesk Change Management tickets but there are particular situations where these fail us.
For example... a tech needs to deploy a job that will deploy Monday - Friday between certain hours in groups of 50 which will take approximately 3 weeks. he sends an email out to the group. They understand that its happening and realize nothing they are doing will conflict with it so they give him the go ahead. 2 weeks down the road, another tech needs to deploy a change to production which might have been gone on vacation for the other techs deployment. He deploys his change which breaks the production environment.
My thoughts were to setup some kind of dashboard or calendar on our IS SharePoint site where techs can input the changes to production of when and what they are doing... This way any tech can check the calendar before he deploys his work.
Wonder how others deal with these situations. Thanks all!
