  • 1.  Managing Software PDFCreator

    Posted Mar 27, 2013 05:14 PM
I'm pretty new to Altiris (9 months). Looking for help to get to 'Set it and forget it'.

As you can see from below. We have many versions of PDFCreator installed.
This list is from Software, Software Catalog, Installed Software.

No packages associated with any of the above.

This list is from Software, Software Catalog, Deliverable Software.
    Deliverable Software
1.4.0     64660649-c825-4380-9629-52a63f7f5fa7     PDFCreator 1.4.0   Frank Heindörfer, Philip Chinery
    1.4.1     8dde77d2-0537-4bb5-b6eb-459132567316                        pdfforge

    These two have packages.
How do I attach the packages above with the Installed Software above

I can install PDF Creator from my Job and Tasks using a PDF Creator install task.
    There are 3 Tasks:
PDF Creator 1.2.3  This installs 1.4.0
PDF Creator 1.4.0  This installs 1.4.0
PDF Creaort 1.4.1  This installs 1.4.1

At some point I made 1.4.0 Supercede 1.2.3 and it magically updated the PDF Creator 1.2.3 task.

    Here's what I'm looking for.

I want to manage PDFCreator. I want to know how may versions are installed where. I want to create a policy to install the latest version  of PDFCreator I have managed on PCs with no PDFCreator and update all the older release to the the managed release.

How would you create the managed software list for PDFCreator? (one for each version)
How do you setup the policy to push PDFCreator to PCs? How do you detect if PDFCreator is already installed?

OK. First you should Merge your deliverable Software Release (package) with their corresponding inventory records.

Select each Inventory record you have a corresponding Software Release (pacakge) for > right-click > assign type. Select each Software Release, remove it from any policy or tasks then right-click > Actions > merge duplicate software resources. Select the corresponding Inventory record. Select to keep the package, command lines, rules, dependencies etc.

You can do it the other way round, merge the Inventory record into the Software Release (package) but the interface to select all the file inventory records can be a pain if there's lots of files. But you don't need to assign type or remove the Software Release from polices and tasks first.

I thought you only need to set Supersed associations if you want to run uninstalls first, you seem to have come across another behaviour I didn't know about.

What version do you want to distribute? if it's any later than the 1.4.1 you have you'll need to import the new version into the software catalog, making sure you attach the imported package to the inventory record.

Then go to Manage > Software Catalog, find the Software Release you want to distribute and click the arrow to manage it. Call it PDF Creator, don't put a version in, make sure the name filter isn't too restrictive so that all the entries you have are listed. Ones that are no longer installed won't show up.

You can right click on each Inventory record and create a filter of all PCs with that software. You can use those filters in targets.

Right click the Software Release you want to distribute > Actions > Managed Software delivery.

But be aware that SP2 deals with Software Products differently, you can't assign them using the Software Resource, you have to match the Software Resource with the Software Product definition.
