Hi, We have a situation where some devices cannot report back a serial number simply because it does not exist either in the BIOS or anywhere else that we might be able to get too programmatically. The serial does exist physically on the device and I would like to manually add it to the existing device entry in the NS. Can this be done and if so how?

    Regards

Yes, you can do manual entry using Asset Management Suite.  Manual entry cannot be done in CMS without AMS.

However, if you do not have AMS, here are a few workaround ideas:

    • Name the computer after the serial number/asset tag, then report on computer name
    • Use BIOS utilities from Dell/HP/etc to set serial number/asset tag as 'Asset Tag' in BIOS, then report on Asset Tag
    • Place the serial number/asset tag value in a registry you create, create a custom inventory to gather this registry value and write it to a custom data class, and report on the custom data class.

    I hope this helps!

thanks Mike. The client does have AMS but I'm a little vauge around exactly how one would go about entering such info. Have not had much exposure to AMS.
