Merging Assets in NS7

jessek's picture

Does NS7 have the ability to merge duplicte resources like NS6 did?  I've noticed one asset that has two records, and in NS6 I could have just right-clicked on and chosen to merge the two.  There's no such option in NS7 that I can see, even though there is a provided report for duplicate device names.

How did you get duplicates in the first place?

I'm curious how you ended up with duplicates in the first place. A new feature of 7 is that the NS Server can now force the Altiris agent to generate a new GUID if a duplicate computer is detected so I"m wondering how you managed to get one duplicated in the first place.

NS 6 had different merge options depending on the products installed. If you just had NS core, there was a "Merge Duplicates" report that you could run to combine. However, if you had Asset and CMDB 6 or 6.2 or 6.5 installed, you had additional merge techniques. Since Asset 7 is not shipping, the asset specfic merge capabilities are not included in the product at this time. I could be remembering wrong but I'm thinking the right-click merge you describe is a function of Asset.

I'm a little curious about

I'm a little curious about that as well.  This happened with a VM, and in the Default organizational view I had the computer listed under Computers and again under Computers\Virtual Machines.  This was the only duplicate device.  I just deleted the one that didn't look to have any data collected.  You could be right about merge function that I was referring to being a part of Asset, as we did have that installed.  I'll just wait to see if that feature show up in the new version.

Merge Resources in NS 7

if you go to control panel, sheduled tasks, you will find a Merge Duplicate Resources Task. Also under Reports - Notification Server Management - Server - Resource Reports, there is report called merged resources.

Make sure the "NS.Merge Duplicate Resources.{dfe04fea-d71a-438f-b40e-a8ecd01304c7}" is running, By default it runs every day at 6.15 AM.

Hope this answer your question.

Using Network Discovery can create multiple Computers

cf. KB 45324 - https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=45324&p=1
Also if your computer not yet in the domain & same name is a "ghost" entry in the imported AD.

I can reproduce 2 computers same name - & report "duplicate computer" does not show them => So after running the "scheduled merging resource" (default every 12h). It is not more "merged"...

1 is a Workgroup machine, other is AD imported machine, same domain name the workgroup name...
So I got 2 PC same name, same domain name (but the 2nd as a wrokgroup name, not domain).
I guess the only way will be delete one of the both, and remove the ghost item in the AD or join the domain (& see if the merge is working better?)
It is logical doing such, and I fell normal Altiris keep both, as they are 2 machines.

Must correct what said above, merge computing was not only an AMS 6 function, also available in CMS 6 level 1 !
