Microsoft SBS 2011 - What gives?
I'm a Symantec partner, and I sell almost exlcusively Symantec products for software security, remote management, and backup. I would like to sell a customer a server in a couple of weeks and it will have Microsoft SBS 2011. I was rather shocked to find that it seems there is no BE product available from Symantec for this OS. What gives? Not that I understand the complexities of product development cycles but usually when a new OS is released, all the big software vendors have had their matching products in development for a while already and thus they release a compatible version for that OS basically at the same time as the OS itself.
I haven't checked into SSR 2011 but I was really hoping to find that BE 2010 R3 or the SBS version of this had MS SBS 2011 support, but neither seems to.
What's up with that? I'm just at a loss. My customer is exclusively Symantec for security and remote management, yet now it looks like I have to go with another brand for backup because Symantec is too slow get a product to market. I mean no disrespect but this seems to be how things are right now.
Please tell me I'm just misinformed here :) Or, is there a place anywhere on Symantec.com that lists the upcoming release dates for BE? Or is there a beta in progress for a version that supports MS SBS 2011 at least?
Argh, I mean, this is just frustrating and I can only imagine the revenue loss Symantec is taking. Every server on Planet Earth that is sold with SBS 2011 is going to have system admins shopping elsewhere for backup, provided they are not willing to take chances on unsupported versions of BE or don't want to use the Windows backup.
Well, I pray I have simply missed the obvious and that indeed there is a version released that supports SBS 2011. :)
*crosses fingers* Please let me know!, thanks

Conflicting information
Alright, so I googled the subject further and came across the following press release or what not from a Symantec rep, and in it, it states that SBS 2011 is supported via a BE 2010 R3 Add-on. Here's that page:
http://www.thebeline.eu/?p=417 (2nd last paragraph I believe)
Yet if I browse now to symantec.com and to the BE 2010 product pages, there is no Add-on, nor Option nor Agent, listed for SBS 2011. Not as of June 3 2011 (today).
Either way, none of the BE SBS edition product pages even mention 2011 so either way the situation is messed up.
I don't know, maybe ntbackup isn't so bad.....or floppy disks......
C'mon Symantec hurry up I've got servers to sell. :)
MIXIT <-----dummy
I thin I misread that release note. It's not that SBS 2011 is supported via an Add-On, it's that it supports the MS SBS 2011 Premium Add-On, in addition to Essentials and STandard editiosn of SBS 2011.
*Walks the plank*
PS: Does this mean that BE SBS edition is being discontinued?
Hello Mixit,
I am sure by now you must have got the information that BE 2010 R3 fully SUPPORTS SBS 2011.
Thanks,
-Sush...
Hope this piece of Information Helps you... and if it does then mark this response as Solution....!!!
Yep, but one question
Yes indeed. :) I think what was throwing me off is that the SBS edition of BE doesn't support MS SBS 2011, yet regular BE does. That seems backwards, unless of course the SBS edition of BE is being discoontinued.
Question though, do the agents and options work the same on an SBS OS as they do in a regualr OS? In particular I'm thinking about the Exchange, Sharepoint and Hyper-V agents.
The SBS edition of BE is just
The SBS edition of BE is just packaging of licences, not some special built of BE. It is still BE. If you use BE 2010 R3, then SBS 2011 will be supported. The agents of the SBS editions are the same as those of the "regular" BE.
You can download BE from either the Fileconnect site or the trailware site, install it, apply the BE SBS key and you will get your BE SBS edition. However, it must be used on the SBS edition of the OS. The BE SBS edition cannot be used on a regular edition of OS.
Paragraph 1 vs. Paragraph 2
pkh: Thank you for the info. I'm a little confused about what you mentioned in paragraph 2 though.
What I understand now is that since my customer will have Microsoft SBS 2011, I will need to get regular BE 2010 R3 and then seperately add whatever options or agents I feel are necessary for SBS's functions (Exchange, AOFO, etc.).
But you mentioned getting an "SBS key". If I go ahead and purchase the regular BE 2010 R3, wouldn't I just get a regular BE key?
Sorry if this seems like I should know better it's just that I'm new to selling BE to customers. Thank you again.
Getting a regular BE licence
Getting a regular BE licence and then adding the agents will be more costly than getting the SBS licence which is a special bundle of licences. You should also talk to Symantec Licensing as they would be in the best position to explain the licencing options to you.
Just to clarify an earlier
Just to clarify an earlier statement
The BE SBS Edition is exactly the same as the full edition (you actually install from the same DVD/Download) with just different options enabled (and possibly a different splash screen) depending on what serial numbers you enter. As such on a Technical Level if 2010 R3 Full Edition supports SBS 2011, then the SBS Edition will support 2011
Also I just checked the current Software Compatibility List for 2010 R3 and in both the Media Servers section and the Remote Agent Section, SBS 2011 Essentials and Standard is listed as supported.
