Hi,   Please elaborate on

Hi,

Please elaborate on "another hardware". Is it just a new server of the same type of hardware i.e. Windows 32bit > Windows 32bit on  new more powerful server? Are you migrating between bits, operating system versions, or operating systems?

If its all the same, just a new server, then you should perform the upgrade as detailed in the upgrade portal

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

Once you've upgraded on your current setup, you can do a DR of the catalog to the new server.

You may choose to do the DR first, and then upgrade on the new server. Depends on your situation.

Riaan Badenhorst

ITs easy ;)

Keep in mind, that the

Keep in mind, that the upgrade from 5.x to 6.x is a big thing to do - you have to make sure that your catalog is 100% consistent or you will get trouble. Kirans Documents and the Symantec support should be able to help you with this, but you might want to hire someone who did this several times before.

Things are easier if you keep the hostname when you change the hardware. That way you don't have to change any client settings or scripts and don't need to fiddle around in the catalog.

You need to decide if you want to change the hardware first or do the update first. I'd update the hardware first, so your upgrade will finish faster :)

If you want to change the platform of your master you will definately need a Symantec Consultant to do the migration. So if you're on Win32 stay there if you have no good reason to change.

I agree with Riaan and Kiran

I agree with Riaan and Kiran : You will have to upgrade to 6.5 on the old hardware, then use catalog backup and restore to migrate to new hardware.

 Starting point:

NBU 6.5 Upgrade Portal: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH52785

You will find all sorts of handy links. Most important one:

The Symantec's Veritas NetBackup (tm) 5.x to 6.5 Upgrade Guide can be found at:
 http://support.veritas.com/docs/290141

Updated link: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH52753  (or the link posted by Kiran).

Take time to read through this doc and perform all preparation steps (such as dowloading the catalog concistency utility (nbcc) http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH67840 ).

After the upgrade, wait a day or two to ensure stability. Patch to a minimum of 6.5.4, then use process in TECH77447 (see Kiran's post) to migrate to new hardware.

Supporting Storage Foundation and VCS on Unix and Windows as well as NetBackup on Unix and Windows.
