Migrate from SAV 10.1.5.5002 to SEP 12.1.x

  • 1.  Migrate from SAV 10.1.5.5002 to SEP 12.1.x

    Posted Aug 25, 2013 10:43 PM

    Hi all

Our company server has Symantec Antivirus Corporation 10 for server and deploy the software the clients.  Recently, I find that the virus definition was just updated up to 8 July 2013.  I know it has to be upgraded and we have the subscription (version 12.1) until 2015.

As I am not familiar with Symantec products, could anyone advise the appropriate approach for migration?

    1. Uninstall management console & uninstall SAV clients -> Install 12.1.x at server -> deploy to clients computers

    2. Just install 12.1.x at the server -> deploy to clients computers after uninstallation at clients computers.

Also, as the settings were setup by our ex-colleague, so I would like to know which approach could keep the config/settings?

    Thanks

    Terry

You can upgrade directly from SAV to SEP 12.1. No need to uninstall SAV and install SEP. You can do a direct upgrade. Just stand up the new SEPM and you can push the client upgrades from it.

    Thanks _Brian

From the upgrade path (attachment), do you mean our version 10.x could be upgraded to the latest 12.1.x?

Also, for the download of the latest SEP (12.1.3) (attachement), do Part 1 & Part 2 the full package of the softwares?  Do I need to download & run the SEPM as well?

On the other hand, I find some steps for upgrade here (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH206823).  So how can I backup the database & stop the SEPM service?

    Thanks a lot.

    Terry

Thanks James007.  So what I need is just the file SEPM.exe.  Then what are the use of Part 1 & Part 2? Are they the full package which is more than I need?

Also, how to backup the database in case I need to go back to the old version?  And what is the meaning of "stop the SEPM service"?

    Thanks

    Terry

Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_Part1_Installation_EN.exe : SEPM and SEP client both are available

    Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_Part2_tools_EN.exe : Available sepm Tools

    Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_SEPM_EN.exe : - Only SEPM package

     Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_SEPM_EN.exe : - only SEPM

Also, how to backup the database in case I need to go back to the old version?  And what is the meaning of "stop the SEPM service"?

    Thanks James007

I can't find anything related to database backup in the article you quote, but here (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH206823)  This article quotes the backup procedures for 12.x & 11.x, not 10.x.  Actually, I can't find any option for backup in SAV 10.x.

I am concerned if there is any accident during upgrade and the system will be down.  But if the upgrade process seems so straight-forward, I will give it a try.

    Thanks

    Terry

Yes, you can go right from SAV to SEP 12.1.3

Part 1 contains all the necessary installs while Part 2 contains many useful tools.

You need to run the setup.exe under the SEPM folder on the server you wish to be the SEPM.

Once you have the SEPM install you can do this. Is it already installed?

Do you mean that after I install SEPM, I could upgrade to 12.1.3?  Then, I don't need to download and run the big files "Part1".

I have not yet installed SEPM as I need to backup the necessary files from server.  I will post here if I find any problem.  Thanks.

Well once you install the SEPM, it should be at 12.1.3. Than you need to upgrade the clients.

This link should help in doing that:

    Thanks _Brian, James007 & Mithun

I think I will take the following steps:

    1. Backup the database of SAV.

    2. Download 12.1.3 SEPM only.

    3. Install SEPM directly on server (no need to uninstall/stop the service, right?)

    4. Migrate to 12.1.3 (keep SAV settings)

    5. Deploy the client to client computers (no need to uninstall SAV in client computers, right?)

    Thanks again.

    Terry

Keep in mind not all settings are migrated:

    Are all client settings migrated?
No. Tamper Protection settings are not migrated. Tamper Protection settings are included in the client general settings rather than the AntiVirus and AntiSpyware policy. Also, you must reconfigure the settings that you disabled for migration, such as scheduled scans, LiveUpdate, and Quarantine purge.
Previously, migrating to newer versions of Symantec AntiVirus required a full product installation, which stressed bandwidth limitations over WAN links.
