Migrate/move Netbackup 6.5.4 media server to new hardware.
Are there any instructions for moving a NetBackup 6.5.4 Solaris media server to new hardware? I don't believe the server will have the same name or IP. It will also be a different class of server, going from desktop/workgroup teir (V880) to the departmental teir (M4000), so a new license will be required. Any advice or direction is appreciated!!! Thanks.
Media server
Media server is quite dumb thing in the NBU hierarchy, you can simply install new one and reconfigure the storage devices.
Things can be little bit easier if you can keep the same hostname, however it's not mandatory.
While V880 is Tier 1 server, M4000 is Tier 2 so, some upgrade of the licence would be required, but technically you can install your server with the same key

Make sure to read all of this, plus some of the notes at the end before proceeding. I am not sure what your environment is so take what you can from this.
2. Transfer files (put them somewhere you can access later)
2.1 install/location/Veritas/netbackup/db/media
2.2 install/location/Veritas/netbackup/var
2.3 install/location/Veritas/volmgr/database
3. Old Media Server
3.1 Disjoin from domain, and join to workgroup
3.2 Remove from DC/PDC
3.3 Remove from DNS
3.4 Shutdown Server
4. Admin Console on Master Server
4.1 Remove Storage Unit
4.2 Remove from Catalog "Files" (read note at end)
4.3 Remove from clients associated with disabled policies (read note at end)
4.4 Remove from Master Server
4.5 Remove from policy (if server is being backed up)
5. Prep new server
5.1 Set static addressing
5.2 Verify DNS settings for multiple domains (if necessary)
5.3 Rename Server to production media server name (depending on naming convention)
5.4 Join Domain
6. HBA Settings
6.1 Modify settings in switch to see the new HBA
6.2 Scan for new hardware on media server (should find the tape drives in the library)
7. Install NB
7.1 License Keys on Master Server
7.2 Update Current to Current Patch level not to exceed that of the Master Server
7.3 Copy files over from old media server (from step 2)
7.4 Restart NB service on Media Server
8. Master Server Admin Console
8.1 Add Storage Unit
8.2 Add to Catalog "Files"
8.3 Add to Clients
8.4 Add to Master Server
8.5 Activate Policies
8.6 Add to original policy for backup
9. Reboot Master Server
**Note: Rebooting the Master Server was the only way I could get it to recognize the storage unit properly. I tried to stop/start the services but it didn't make a difference.
*** It may not be necessary to delete from policies if you reboot the server upon adding the media server/storage unit. For cleanliness it would be advised.

Keep the same hostname if possible
I'm assuming this is just a media server, and not the master server.
Installing the media server software on the new system and connecting it to master server is pretty straight forward.
The problem that you may run across is with the EMM database on the master server.
The EMM database on the master server will have a record of tapes with backup images that were written by and belong to that media server.
If you change the hostname of the media server, the EMM database will not be able automatically re-assign those tapes to the new media server
since the "old" media server is no longer around.
You will probably have to deassign the tapes to another media server and then reassign them back to the new media server.
I recommend opening up a Symantec support case to leverage their expert advice.
Do you really need to reboot the master server?
Hello All,
I have installed Netbackup 6.5.4 on a new media server that I am installing. Everything seems to have installed properly. I am able to see all the drives etc ..
The only probem is, the master server is showing it as offline when I run vmoprcmd.
All the services on the media server are running and vmoprcmd -activate_host -h <hostname> does not work with this version ??
So my question, do you need restart the master server or maybe restart the services on master?
I am using Solaris 10 on my OS on all servers.
Thanks!
To be able to do restores
FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = oldmediaserver newmediaserver
this way the new media server will take over when a restore is requested were the old media server 'owned' the tape.
Once the images on the tape expires and becomes un-assigned, the next server to use the tape will own it - so you only have to make sure you can do restores.
There is a tech note
What is the process for decommissioning a NetBackup 6.5 media server?

I don't have to know how to spell....I work on Unix.
