Migrating Altiris CMS 7.1 to new Server

Hi

Appreciate if anyone from the group can provide procedures and best practices on the ff. scenario.

Currently, we have Asset Management Suite and Inventory Solutions 7.1 (without SPs) installed on a Windows 2008 R2 server with MS SQL 2008.

Now, we are planning to use Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2. Is it possible to perform the ff.?

1. Install Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2 on a new and more powerful server but is it possible to use the existing DB used by AMS and IS 7.1? Thus, pointing the installation of NS 7.1 SP2 to existing DB used by NS 7.1 would there be any issue?

2. Since Altiris CMS includes Inventory Solution, we would like to replace the existing Inventory Solution with the one included with Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2.

3. Is it possible to tranfer the communication of the existing Altiris agent from NS 7.1 to a different server with NS 7.1 SP2?

Thank you in advance.

I'd proceed as follows:

  1. Build and test your new NS with exactly the same solutions and versions as the exisiting one.
  2. Create a copy of the existing NSs database and point the new NS at it and test
  3. Upgrade the new NS with the latest solutions.
  4. Use the Advanced settings of the Agent config policies on the existing NS to divert agents from the old NS to the new one.

Thanks for the suggestion, @andykn101

hope you still consider my follow up questions?

Considering item number 1, our challenge now would be the installer for NS v7.1. Since we use SIM to install the NS, it always download for the latest release (unless there's a workaround to download the old one). Is it just possible to install NS7.1 SP2 and connect it to the DB used by NS 7.1?

On item 3, assuming I was able to upgrade the NS to 7.1 SP2 with AMS 7.1 and Inventory Solution 7.1, What to do next?
- upgrade AMS and Inventory Solution to 7.1 SP2?
- or install CMS 7.1 SP2 and it will automatically upgrade Inventory Solution 7.1?

Thank you in advance..

Deep within your program files\altiris\symantec installation manager\installs directory or similar there will be all the install files used to create your current installation. There is a way in SIM to point to a local installation source but I've never used it. If that's too difficult you could run each msi with the parameter SKIPAIM=1.

You can install the latest version and then point the install to the old DB but i don't think that's the recommedned way to do it.

If you can build the NS with the same versions as your old one I'd then run SIM again and upgrade everything already installed first. Then run SIM and install CMS and AMS, this will install the Solutions you didn't have before.

Upon doing my research on this assignment I saw the ff documentation from the KBs.

Restoring Notification Server from a backup or upgrading it to new hardware

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO9763

and notice the ff. note on item number 8 after pointing to the old DB

If the Notification Server version is later than the database version, this step is performed automatically when you save the changes to the Database Settings page.

Meaning (as fas I understand it), after installing a fresh install of updated NS and point it to the old DB, it will automatically upgrade the database version.

Thank you

BTW, appreciate your suggestions and effort @andykn101. Thank you

One more thing,,

I noticed that after the altiris agent transfer the communication to the new NS, the task server didnt change. Altiris agent still pointing to the old task server which is the old NS.

I already manually assigned the subnet to the new NS and even remove the task service from the old NS still, the altiris agent reports to the old Task server.

Any idea how to fix this?

thank you in advance

Make sure your new Task Server is working then run a Task on the new NS to reset Task Agent on clients. Then the Agents should point to the new Task Server. If they don't check the Altiris log on a client for clues.
