  • 1.  Migrating clients/package servers to NS7

    Hi

I'm doing a migration from NS version 6 to 7. I won't be migrating any data from the old NS 6.x system as it's very messy.

Updating the agents is as simple as running an AD import and enabling the altiris agent update policy but how should I be updating existing package servers from 6 to 7?  Is it simply a case of updating the altiris agent to version 7 or do I then have to re-add them as site servers in site server settings?

Also what happens to the user defined packages?  I have a package containing images for DS going to a non-default folder on a seperate partition.

    Thanks for any replies.

I thought you need to recreate site server because NS 7 use new database "Symantec_CMDB"

    Robert,
I haven't gone down the NS7 road quite yet, but I think there may be some components you want to migrate, particularly your site settings and Package servers.  What may work easier for you would be to push the Agents to the new NS from your NS6 box, then re-direct them to the new NS7 box.  This will allow you to utilize your existing Package Servers to distribute the NS7 agent package to reduce WAN bandwidth.  Once that is done, you can use Agent settings policy to specify the new NS name (or create a SWD job that runs AeXAgentUtil.exe /Server:yourNS7box.company.com) to move the clients over.  I think if you go the way you are so far, all your packages will be re-replicated (and have to be redefined) on the NS7 box.  That DS build should remain since it is in a non-default destination, but not sure.

Thanks Kyle I'll bear that in mind.

Theres very little setup as it stands.  Only thing the NS was being used for really was to replicate the DS images about.

I'm going to do some testing before I go for the full rollout.  I have a package server from an old decomissioned site so I'll try it out tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

    Hi

I got through it.  My library package did NOT need to be re-replicated.  Below is the procedure I used.

    1. Check the NS 6 agent is installed on the server and that all replication is complete
    2. Go to actions > agents/plug-ins > push altiris agent
    3. Add the package server
    4. Highlight the machine and click install then proceed with install
    5. Once the agent has been installed on the machine, and a config update has taken place, the
legacy package server update task should be initiated.
    6. After this has run go to settings > notification server > site server settings on the console
    7. Click new > site server
    8. Highlight the server and click > to move the server to the right hand box and click next
    9. Check the boxes for the package service and click next
    10. Confirm and click next
    11. After several minutes check the package server tab on the package server agent to confirm
replication of core packages is taking place.
