I am not aware of any documents describing how to migrate.  However, if the customer is taking advantage of features such as content filtering, Message Filter is probably not the right choice, they would want the gateway.  If they are strictly doing anti-spam and/or AV, Message Filter would work.

The scope of work depends on a few things:

    - What platform are they on?
    - What MTA are they using?  (SMS for SMTP comes with an MTA or a particular MTA integration? ... I think it might be the same as SBMF)
    - What does their bmiconfig.xml look like?

The minimal change would be to convert the configuration to a Message Filter configuration (if they are using an SBMF supported MTA on an SBMF supported platform only using only AS and/or AV).

    Thanks for your reply....

I have created and forwarded the document to customer and now  they revert with the new queries.

please find below queries related to Bright Mail Installation/Up gradation:

For Bright mail Message Filter implementation in offline mode & in parallel to existing SMS for SMTP application, please clarify on below points:

1      Can we install & configure Bright Mail Message Filter 6.1 on a other free server in offline mode.
2      Can we create new policies & import existing policies in to Bright Mail Message Filter 6.1.
3      Once done can we change IP’s address of Bright Mail Message Filter 6.1 Server to that of SMS for SMTP Server with minimal downtime & then remove SMS for SMTP from network & make Bright Mail Message Filter 6.1 online.

    Thanks in advance.....

1 and 3 should be fine.  2 is the tricky part.  Unfortunately there is no simple "import policy" solution.  SMS for SMTP has a different feature set than Message Filter.  If SMS for SMTP is being used strictly for anti-spam, it may be easier to convert the configuration/policy to a Message Filter policy.  However, if SMS for SMTP is being used for more than just anti-spam, the Brightmail Gateway has a more compatible feature set, and is probably a more appropriate replacement.

    > Can we change IP address of installed message filter ?

    Yes.

As far as the database differences with SMS for SMTP, I can't speak towards those because I do not know enough about SMS for SMTP.
