  • 1.  migrating primary and branch servers- which software do i install?

    Posted Jul 21, 2009 01:35 AM

    Hi there

In a test environment, I am upgrading from Symantec AntiVirus 10.x to SEP 11 MR4.

Now, we have a primary server and then our local branch servers.

On the primary server, I have installed the server software from disc 1.

What software do I install on the branch server?

The same software that I installed on the primary server?

Also, what is the difference between the software on disc1 and disc2?

    Thanks

Well you need to plan out the migration first.

How many computers you have on each site? if 200 or less at each site then

On your main site you have already installed the SEP Manager Console ( I beleive) --FOrget about Disc 2 you wont need that

You have to make 5 groups in SEP Manager one group in each site..well you can have sub-group as well if need to drill down further.

Now start deploying the SEP client on all your computers inclucing the Secondary servers.
Then Make all your secondary servers as Group Update Provider (GUP)
These GUPs will act as secondary servers as you had in SAV.
Please read this doc for more information on GUP

    Hi,

SAV 10 and SEP 11 are different products, there is not a one-by-one relationship between the pieces of the two product.
On disc one there are the SEP Manager and the SEP client.
You have to install the SEP Manager and from its console you have to export and deploy an installation package for you clients.
This basic installation does not require CD2, it contains some optional tools.
You can set your branch servers as Group Update Providers (GUP), it means that they will take the content from the Manager and will deploy to a group of clients. This does not require any additional software, just the SEP client is enough.

Thanks so much for the replies. Yeh, we only have like 50 clients. Will give this a try in my test environment. Cheers!

if you only have 50 clients I suggest that you need only one server to manage your clients even on the remote site.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know of any tutorials or manuals that show how to setup Group Update Providers? I really have no idea to be honest

    Hi their.
How do I go about verifying whether my host is actually acting as a GUP server? On the PC that I want to be a GUP, their is a shared updates folder but theirs nothing in it and  protection manager console is telling me that PC is not up to date. How do I access LiveUpdate on the Main server, or force an update?

Edit: I am pretty sure the host is acting as a Update Provider but it is still saying that the definitions on that PC are from April.

Check if SEPM is downloading the updates and it up to date..
are all the clients not gettings definitions or just this GUP client..
First do the Virus Defintions updation troubleshooting..once thats working
