Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition

Hello, I'm looking to do a series of upgrades from version SEPM 11 to 12.

One thing I'm curious about is if SEPM works well if the machine the management server is running on is virtual.

I found the tech guide for SEP 12.1 on clients which are running firewall/antivirus.

So this question is a bit different ... I am assuming that SEPM will work well on a virtual vmware guest OS.

I'm using Windows server 2003 right now and want to switch over eventually to Windows server 2008 and upgrade the app.

Any advice on this whole process in general?

 

 

As long as you follow the guides and meet that hardware requirements, you should be fine. All my SEP environments are virtualised and there has been no issues in that regard.

with the supported OS and the meeting the system requirement you can have SEPM on VM hosted machine.

I am not sure on how are you moving the SEPM 11.x to a new VM machine.

Treat it just like you would if deploying to a physical machine. There's no difference in how it behaves.

We've run the SEPM on virtual servers for many years. In fact, I don't think we've ever had SEPM on a physical machine - always virtual because I believe I did the move from SAV to SEP about the same time we changed to virtual servers.

Just simply follow all the exact same rules as you would otherwise related to IP changes, name changes, and so on. SEPM doesn't really care what it's on as long as you meet the minimums, the OS standards, and follow best practices on the IP addressing and configuration.  It senses it's on a virtual platform, but that's mainly to offset scans and such in case you set scheduled scans for several machines - it ensures that they don't all start at the exact same time and kill your VMware hosts!
