    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Symantec community.

I would be glad to answer your query.

Easiest option can be an upgrade of existing SEPM to the latest version i.e. SEP 12.1 RU3

After successufull upgrade you can migrate it to new Server machine.

However if you still want the legacy SEP version then it need to be requested from support team.

Support team can upload it on FTP server and can provide necessary credentials to download it.

    Refer this article:

upgrade the existing to ru3 and then install new server as a replication partner

I was really impressed with Symantec service, I created a ticket and about 1 hour later if that I got a call from a technician and he did a remote session with me step by step all the way through till the end, really good service I have to say That's said I'm now running a trial licence on the new sepm, so how can I transfer the licence from the old sepm to the new sepm?

You can import the same slf file that you imported into your old sepm. If you don't have the license file, you can contact licensing@symantec.com to get another one.

Thanks, Do I need to deactivate the licence file on the old sepm or can I just transfer it to new sepm without deactivation first

No need to deactivation. When you install new sepm , import the license again.

    one last question,

ive set up a policy on the old sepm for the clients to commuinicate with the new sepm but the trouble is, ive noticed as ive left it overnight that many clients on the new sepm still say offline, i resolved this by restrating a couple of clients and now there communicating with the new sepm

but how do i go about updating the servers as i cannot restart them as there live

any help would be greatly appreciated

    many thanks

Use psexec to recyle smc.exe service. That should force the client to communicate and take up the new policy.

    Hello,

    Check these Articles:

    Licensing Symantec Endpoint Protection

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO80778

Activating your new or renewed Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 product license

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH162623

You need to purchase a license in the following situations:

    • You want to purchase Symantec Endpoint Protection.

    • Your trialware license expired.

    • Your paid license expired.

    • Your license is over-deployed.

    • Your upgrade license from Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.x expired.

Starting with version 12.1, you do not need to manually download a license file. Depending on the method that you used to purchase your license, a Symantec license file (.slf) or a license serial number is sent to you in an email.

    See About purchasing licenses.

    See Checking license status.

    See About the trialware license.

    Hope that helps!!

    Hello,

In this case, you may not need to restart the server, you can make the client report the latest SEPM by simply changing the sylink.xml on the client machine.

    Check these Articles:

Restoring client-server communication settings by using the SylinkDrop tool

    Hi,

Instead of restart if manually restarted the service will help?

To restart the SEP client service go to

Start --> Run --> smc -stop (stop the service)

Start --> Run --> smc -start (start the service)

mmm so its not as easy as ending the process "smc.exe"  and restarting the  "symantec management client"

out of those, the "Restoring client-server communications with Communication Update Package Deployment"

as i did a basic server install on the servers and that doesnt need a restart will this communication update package need one aswell or not

I suggest to esblish first your new SEPM server (SEPM 12.1 RU3) then create an install settings in admin tab, then select Install Packages.

In Install Settings, you can create or add another settings. In Basic Settings tab, select the "Remove all previous logs and policies, and the reset client-server communications settings".

Then, create an installer package with the install settings you've created. Deploy the Installer package to the SEP clients with 12.1.671.4791 version and it will automatically upgraded and report to your new SEPM server.
