  • 1.  Migrating from XP to Windows 7 64 bit

    I'm trying to figure out if anyone here has any experience with using PC Transplant (under DS 6.9 preferred or DS 7.1 if needed) to migrate users from 32 bit Windows XP to 64 bit Windows 7. From what I've read in the doco 64bit simply isn't supported at all. That strikes me as a huge omission that simply seems too large to ignore. Can anyone provide some insight on this or do I have to go with another tool?

    hi ,

    I put in place a migration process for our environment, which (in brief) looks like this. I hope this helps a bit? Please let me know if you need a more detailled description on any points...

    -BBC

    Environment:

    -Currently still DS 6.9 SP4

    - Clients before migration WinXP SP3 x32

    - Clients after migration (over 1,000 done successfully yet) Win7 x64 (SP1 also possible.

    Process:

    1. In XP environment copy down USMT (both, x32 and x64)
    2. Capture the user data & settings to the local machine;
    3. Copy across WinPE x64 or boot to WinPE x64 (we use a modified Altiris WinPE 2.1 which allows us to boot off the local HD instead of booting to WinPE over the network), change the MBR to boot off WinPE if you also use the way we do;
    4. Copy across your Win7 source, applications, driver sets, etc;
    5. Run the initial Win7 setup.
    6. Depending on what processes you have in place and what the XML contains, automated installations of driver packs, patches and applications is being performed and as last task, the DAgent is installed.
    7. run USMT again to restore the user settings and data from the previously capture;
    8. cleanup the system and you're good.

    For the most part, PCT 6.8.1064 works for migration from Win XP 32 bit to Win 7 64 bit. There are still a few issues with PCT that I have open tickets with Symantec for.
