  • 1.  Migration of Oracle from 32 bit to 64 bit platform ( vontu DLP )

    Posted Jan 16, 2014 08:48 AM

    HI,

In vontu DLP , Is it possible to restore 32 bit 11.2.0.1  oracle DB  to 64 bit platform Provided version on the destination is same ( 11.2.0.1 ) ?

I assume that OS has to be same.

The migration guide does say that 32 bit 11.2.0.3 oracle db to 64 bit 11.2.0.3 is possible but does not specifically clarifies for 11.2.0.1 version.

    Appreciate any inputs !

I don't think this kind of migration is officially tested. But, it maybe work.

    Here are the brief steps:

    1. install the Oracle 11.2.0.1 x64 on the 64bit platform

    2. create the protect instance on the 64bit platform

    3. copy the database files of protect on 32bit platform to the 64bit

    4. create the listener on 64bit

    5. change the JDBC connector on the Enforce to connect to the new 64bit Oracle

    Ankits,

The process of upgrading the DB's from 32bit to 64bit is the same for either version of the Oracle DB. There is no difference of the approach, it is the same process.

Though for the long run I would make sure that you get to 11.2.0.3 or 11.2.0.4 so that you can upgrade the DLP platform to version 12.

Enclosed is the upgrade guide for oracle .. it oultines how to upgrade from 11.2.0.1 for 11.2.0.3. In the long run you want to make sure the DB is upgraded along with the DLP version..

    Hope this makes sense.

    Thanks Yang and Ronak.

Since its not tested I would rather go with upgrade to 11.2.0.3 before migration.

    Ankits,

    It has been done before.

Here is the upgrade guide from 11.6, the process is the same if you compare the two of them

    Hope this makes sense.

Sorry to hijack this for another question from my side:

Does DLP 11.6.3 have any issues with Oracle 11.2.0.4? I'd prefer to use 11.2.0.4 in the end, since this is the latest version.

11.2.0.4 is not currently supported by Symantec DLP

Well yes, I know that. But does DLP have any known issues with this version?
... 11.2.0.3 is starting to become a little outdated these days ;)

DLP Support for Oracle 11.2.0.4 is on our roadmap however, as with all roadmap items, the exact timing is not currently set.

Thanks for the information, I'll take this as a "let's try it out, it most probably will work nicely" ;)
