  • 1.  Missing operating system PGP-WDE (Win 8.1)

Just decrypted and upgraded to win 8.1, and have been using Perfect Disk (by Raxco, which is Symantec) for defragging. FYI-Raxco makes registry drivers if you use wde, and their pgp driver gave no issues for years under win 8. After full pgp encryption after the win 8.1 upgrade, I received "no operating system identified" after logging in to PGP. Called Raxco and they said there is a compat issue with 8.1. Question is: I am using the recovery DVD now to decrypt, but when I totally decrypt will I find that the MBR was altered by Perfect Disk, in combination with PGP? Is the error "no OS identified" resolvable after decryption? I think the MBR was damaged and that I need to reinstall/repair win 8. I really think I need to reformat the drive with a clean win install. I also might go back to win 7 since 8 is not much better?

Raxco said perfect disk may move pgp files, but it doesn't alter the MBR.

    Hi Lep11,

Thanks for the information regarding Raxco and MBR. In general we don't recommend to run a defragmentation process on encrypted drive using a 3rd party Software like Raxco ( just for the clarification In the mid-90s, the security division of the Raxco company went public as Axent Technologies, which was subsequently acquired by Symantec for close to a billion dollars - http://www.symantec.com/about/news/release/article.jsp?prid=20001218_01) )

If you need to run a defrag on encrypted drive - standard Windows Defrag tool should be used. Any other 3rd party tools should be checked in their support first to find out which sectors of the drive is moved including MBR.

Let us know if "no operating system identified" has been rectyfied and in fact if MBR was altered by Perfect Disk after your troubleshooting.

    RESOLVED.

The issue was that when upgrading to Win 8.1, PerfectDisk (PD) verson 12.5 had issues.   Thus, Raxco (Symantec) released PD version 13 for 8.1.    However, I went back to Win 7 Pro, which has much faster startup times and is actually faster than 8 or 8.1
