  • 1.  Missing PGP WDE passphrase prompt

I have had a PGP WDE external drive connected to my PC for several years.  Each time I restart (from shutdown or restart) I am prompted to enter a passphrase.

I need to connect this external drive to another computer to transfer some files.  The passphrase prompt is not appearing after every restart.  It showed up several times yesterday but now it does not appear at all even after several restarts.  When I go to the drive directly I receive a message that it needs to be formatted in order to access.  I've encountered the "formatting" message on my old PC when I had failed to enter the passphrase so I know that it just needs that passphrase to be entered, I just can't figure out how to get to the prompt.

How to I get the system to activate the passphrase box?

The reason is because PGP isn't installed on this other computer.  This computer doesn't know its encrypted, and there's no mechanism to prompt for a password to it.  I suggest you either decrypt the HDD on the original machine with PGP on, or install PGP, and access it the normal way, as PGP will then prompt for a password if you install PGP onto this other machine.

    Hi ksheets,

The alternative is to reverse the process.
Connect the hard disk of the new machine to the encrypted machine and transfer the data.

Yes, I thought that might be the problem so I have gone ahead and installed PGP onto the new machine.  The passphrase prompt appeared a few times after that, but has not appeared since.  Is there a way to activate the prompt through the software?  That is what I could not find yesterday.

The "PGP machine" is an external harddrive.  It needs to be connected to something else, I cannot connect the other machine to it.

    Hi ksheets,

Apologies, I misread your initial post.
Then, the only way to get access to its contents is to connect the drive to a machine with WDE installed.
