Hi there,  in a specific ESM manager(6.5.35), a number of ESM client servers (v6.5.35) are throwing

error writing prologue to <server name>
error writing prologue to <server name>

when we inspected the output of "lrt /esm/system/`hostname`", we noticed that  tmp directory is missing. As a trial and error, tmp directory has been manually created and this seems to fix the issue. Is this the right approach to resolve this? and what's causing this error to appear?  I would like to believe that the ESM manager is out of sync which making these servers to go haywire but I have no solid proof to affirm this.

Need some details..

Hi,

This error suggests that the server (Manager) is not able to send the required information to the clients (Agents) while it is trying to start the policy run on them.

I would like to know, where did you create the \tmp folder? On the ESM Manager (server) or the ESM Agents (Clients)?

Thanks,
-Rupali

hi Rupali

Good day!

I'm also one of the user for Symantec ESM 6.5 and encountering massive prologue errors in my client servers.
Hence, the agents are not updating anymore.
Can you please advice what are the solutions to overcome this problem?

Our current practise was to unregister/delete the agent and re-install it (at host side). But it's very troublesome work as this involves hundreds of client servers.
You kind advice is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Best regards,
Derrick Yong

Ways to create ESM system specific directories on UNIX

Hi,

In case the ESM system specific directories are missing after the installation (I guess an unsuccessful one in this case), no need to worry or uninstall and install the agent.  Since in your case it is a UNIX system, simply do the following:-

1. Go to the base installation directory of ESM; ## cd /esm
2. Run esmsetup program; ## ./esmsetup
3. Select advanced installation option 3.
4. Type 'y' to proceed with the advanced installation option. Again hit enter to continue after you read the note.
5. When it will ask you to select the phases to run, only select option 6 - Create system-specific directories. The setup will create the required directories.

You should get a message like the following.
...
PHASE 6: creating system-specific directories...

Enterprise Security Manager 6.5 (2007/03/23 03:13) SU NNNN setup complete

6. Run ls command under /esm/system to make sure it has <agent-hostname> directory, db directory and tmp directory listed.

Hope this helps.

Hi Vignesh

Hi Vignesh,
Thanks for coming back.
How about for WIntel servers encountering prologue errors?

For Wintel servers

For Windows servers, if you get the missing ESM drectories problem, the installer's repair option should do the trick. Let me know if the repair option does not help recreate the necessary ESM sub-directories.
