Mixing Remote Agents and Media Servers

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Is it possible to install a remote agent for Backup Exec 2012 onto a Windows 2003 server that is also a media server running Veritas version 9.1?

I'm getting a error - 0x643 - in the job log when I try to push the agent from the 2012 Media server. When I try to install the agent directly from CD the "Local" install option is not available (greyed out).

Thoughts?

Thanks!!

Hi,

Nope, they can't coincide. You either need to get another media server and load BE 2012 on it from scratch, or do a multi-step upgrade from BE 9.1 to get to BE 2012 and retain media settings etc.

You need to get to BE 12.5, and from there you can directly upgrade to BE 2012.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, this is not possible. You cannot install 2 different versions of Backup Exec on a single server and make them work at the same time.

However, if you are intending to backup the Server that has veritas 9.1, then you might have to either upgrade as Craig suggested or uninstall it and install a 2012 agent.

Thanks!! for the fast responses to my question. I'm going to go a different route and use my 2012 media server to host both a LTO4 and a LTO5 library. I'll shut down the old LTO2 unit and remove Veritas 9.1 from the server and install a remote agent from the new media server. The LTO4 will restore my LTO2 tapes and all new backups will happen on the LTO5.
