  • 1.  MMF Registration failed...repeatedly and often

I have been trying to install SMP 7.1 for a little over two weeks and keep getting errors about failed MMF registration. I tried moving the server to a different OU to eliminate possible security setting issues, with patches, without patches, with antivirus, without antivirus, rebuilt from scratch, rolled back to a snapshot, older SIM, newest SIM, with sysadmin rights on the SQL server, without sysadmin rights, clean database, reconnecting to old database from previous setup attempts, and all with the same result. I finally found some articles with a couple things to try and it seems to have fixed my issue.  Here is what I found:

    1) Use the fix in the prereq checker to disable the CRL download/check. This check can cause timeout issues especially in environments without internet connectiosn. - http://en.community.dell.com/dell-groups/dell-management-console/w/dell_management_console-wiki/dmc-faq.aspx

    2) Give the "network service" account modify right on the system temp folder. The default folder is c:\windows\temp. You can look at the system environment variables to determine the correct folder. - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH42637

Hopefully this will save someone some time. I have been working with support on this and they were scratching their heads as well.

Well it worked once but not again. I will update when I have more information.

This was a proxy issue.  The proxy was set in IE and the installer uses those settings. Every time it tried to connect to IIS it was refused because it went through the poxy and the proxy would challenge the authentication which would then fail.

since I couldnt' configure the proxy beforehand (it ignored my IE settings), was actually go the web - on the server, which was tragically funny, and download the zip file with pl content.

Then I manually put it in the place it would normally reside, and then I was actually able to get to the settings on the SIM to enter my proxy settings and see the files I wanted to download.

I would suggest an idea to be able to configure proxy settings during the SIM setup and prereq check.

I think they way they use the proxy is broken. If you specify a specific proxy it will probably work but we use a pac file and it doesn't read the pac file as best I can tell.

but I still have quite a few issues with proxies and task clients. There are some workarounds for it, but proxies in general seem to the be garlic\holy water for implementation.

Three weeks to get it mostly installed. And the proxy settings interfere with the installer itself so it cannot connect to the IIS locally which causes all the configuration steps to fail but not necessarily report that they failed. I have something which is mostly working at this point. There are some things I am trying to sort out with support but they are probably fixable. I like the product if you can get past installing it.
