Customer is asking if there’s any option to limit the amount of data transfer in this Mobile Management.

The issue they’ve been having is while people are travelling, some times they transfer Gig’s of files without knowing and a few grand was charged by telco afterwards. It would be great to have that feature – capability of setting the limit of roaming or transferring data.

We can therefore limit when the agent communicates with the server, which could somehow decrease the amount of data transfered.

But if the users access the mobile library... they'll trigger the download of content

Now Mobile Library content cannot exceed 25Mb if I remember well, so...

 

The agent:
will only send the inventory in a cycle configured before.
So if this cycle gets slowed down the transferred data will be just some kb/day.
This will not prevent any activities done by the user. For example accessing and downloading something from the library.

The console:
will not transfer huge amount of data to the device by default. So the administrator should act carefully if deploying new policies to devices which request data transfer to the devices.

Best practice:
will be to ensure that devices like this will not get any change in the library as required. Further you could dispatch a dedicated profile containing a special set of Restrictions to the devices in advance of the travel to ensure no unnecessary data transfer will take place over 3G.

This is enhanced in Symantec Mobile Management 7.2

There is a policy "All Feeds - All Managed Mobile Devices" where you can create a filter (Devices with roaming) and exclude it from the filter, (This will stop the Library contents from being received by the device), but as mentioned above, the device will continueto check in and send the Agent & MDM inventory which are KiloBytes traffic.
