Mobile devices make connection with Notification Server 7.0.7416 more often than other types of phones
Updated: 14 Jul 2010 | 4 comments
HI,
We have implemented a Notification Server 7.0.7416 (formely Altiris product). We noticed than some mobile phones "check in" with the server more often than other phones. This is resulting in a huge bill for these phones because of their data usage when in other countries. Is there a patch for this or any known issues with certain types of mobile phones?

Specific Information-?
Hi Mannk1srq,
Are you using Symantec Endpoint Protection Mobile Edition 6? What's the exact version on your devices? How were they installed/what procedure?
Are the devices able to successfully reach/check in to the NS? Or does the attempt fail on the phones which are giving you trouble?
I am not aware of any issue similar to what you describe, so plaase do supply as much info as possible so that the forum can help get to the bottom of the matter.
Thanks and best regards,
Mick

Hi Mick2009-Symantec Endpoint Protection 6.0.1.15.
The mobile devices are running Symantec Endpoint Protection 6.0.1.15.
There were installed following the deployment guide. Placing the AgentInstallConfig.xml, SEPME_PPC_USA.cab, and SEPME_SP_USA.cab into the "My Documents" folder on the Windows Mobile 6.5 devices. Then runnning either of the .cab files to start the install depending on the type of phone. After the device reboots, I run liveupdate and then run update under the Mobile Agent after entering the user's name, phone number , and email address under the user's profile. I get a "healthy connection and a "mission complete". I can then see the device on the NS server.
The main issues we are having is that some types of phones particularly HTC devices are constantly "checking in" with the server for some unknown reason causing the battery life of the phones to drain more quickly than usual. The performance of the apps on the phone run slower than usual. And last, the bill that we receive from their wireless carriers are quite huge because of all the overage on their data plans.
Best to Open a Case with Technical Support
Hi Mannk1srq,
You are using the latest release of the software - I'm not aware of any condition in which SEPME should be making more communications with NS from one kind of device than from another. If the policy files are the same on HTC and other Windows Mobile devices, they should all be behaving the same way.
What you're descriving sounds a bit more complex than what a volunteer peer forum can swiftly handle. :) It is probably best to open a case with Symantec Tech Support so that the matter can be looked into in detail and a complete solution reached.
Thanks and best regards,
Mick
