  • 1.  Monitor Solution 7 - Get OK result and recurring checks

    Posted Feb 28, 2012 04:39 AM

    Hello everybody,

We are new to Altiris Monitor Solution 7 and we would like to get some help regarding the following:

We would like to get recurring checks and an OK result.

    An example:

We have a ping policy for monitoring uptime of our servers. We would like to have a recurring check; not just one check and one e-mail but a repeating check with complimentary status e-mail. Second we would like to get a status OK result notifcation by e-mail.

Is this possible? We like to hear from you.

    Many thanks in advance.

Forgive me, I do not completely follow your example.  If I may reiterate for my own clarification...

You would like ping your servers on an interval.  Say every 5 or 10 minutes.  Correct?

And for every successful check of each and every server, you would like an email stating the server is pinging?

While the solution can certainly do that, I would not recommend doing it that way.  Perhaps immediate alerts when a server is down and daily health reports that would automatically be sent to you via email?

    Don,

Example, we monitor our switches with a ping, polling every 15 seconds. Switch A is unreachable and within 15 seconds the first alert is send. We would like to have a recurring check with alert which checks if switch A is still down (maybe still 15 seconds or prefarable 1 or 2 minutes). If switch A is back online, we would like to get a success (or recover) alert.

Get the idea? We would like to stay up to date without checkin in the Monitor Solution. Our former Monitor solutions software has this functionality (Nagios, OPSVIEW).

The agentless metric will continue to poll on the interval that is set for it, regardless of the current status of the rule.  Unlike OpenView or Nagios however, there is not functionality within the monitoring tool to change the frequency of tests based on the state of a rule.  As for email alerting, this can be handled under the actions/severities related to the policy.

As an example, in the agentless ping metric, you have the polling set to 15 seconds.  You have a rule that evaluates that metric, and on an unavailble result from the metric, you set the severity in the rule to critical.

At the policy level, under the actions tab, you associate an email task both critical and normal severity.  During a state change between normal to critical, you will then receive an email, as well as a state change from critical to normal.

You cannot, as I mentioned, change the metric's gathering frequency based on the rule's current state, so having it poll more frequently when it is in a bad state is currently impossible.
