I have a Red Hat linux server with the Altiris Agent for Linux installed.
My Monitor Solution agent install policy for linux is enabled, but the agent does not get installed onto
the linux server. Even after 2 hours when the configation updates. Other agents like the inventory agent
installed fine when the policy was enabled.

Can anyone tell me if there is a manual way of installing the Monitor Solution Agent for linux onto that server?

Monitor Agent for Linux

Hi Antonp,

Just checking which version you are using?   In General there is a Monitor Agent for Linux Package which should show you where the Package is located and also the command line used during install and you can then run this manually if needed.

Version 6

 Hi Joseph_Carson,

We are using Monitor Solution 6, i found the the path to where the agent package is located and asked the Linux guys to do a manual install of the agent. Will find out today if the install was successful and if i can now monitor that server. Thanks for the assistance.

Monitor Agent for Linux

 Hi Joseph_Carson,

When i try and push the Altiris agent for Linux to a linux server i get the following error in the log:

"Connect (SSH, Telnet) has Failed
Computer a00l034(192.168.119.204) might be switched off.
You may also need to check the credentials supplied, the firewall rules on the computer and its SSH or telnet configuration."

Could this not be the reason why the Monitor agent for Linux does not want to communicate back to the Notification server?
We confirmed the Monitor agent is installed and the service is started on the Linux server.

Monitor Agent for Linux

Hi Antonp,

This message is related to the Altiris Agent, you will need to check that the Altiris Agent can communicate with the NS Server.

Monitor Agent for Linux

You will need to check the following:

 sshd is not running on client
 Wrong credentials supplied
 Firewall blocks incoming all connections (port 22 should be allowed)

Antonp's picture

Red Hat Linux 5.2 CentOS release

Might this also be a factor? The version of Linux?

Another Symentec colleague said this is not officially supported.

Red Hat Linux 5.2 CentOS release

Hi Antonp,

Correct in the current release RHEL 5.2 is not yet officially supported and it is planned for this year.  Though it should still not have any problems getting it installed.

SSH

Hi Joseph_Carson,

 sshd is not running on client

- Should ssh be running on the client computer (Linux/AIX Server) and on Altiris server?

 Wrong credentials supplied

- The altiris service account with Domain Admin rights correct credentials?

 Firewall blocks incoming all connections (port 22 should be allowed)

- I see that you mentioned that port 22 should be allowed, is that the only port needed and what is the reason for this port to be allowed. Does it not open up a port for hackers?

SSH

Port 22 is used by SSH, it’s needed for "push" installation of the Altiris Agent.
After that it should not be needed and it’s not used by Monitor.

Port 1011 is used by Monitor Agent and is only needed for the Real-Time Performance Viewer.
If Real-Time Performance Viewer is not required, then port 1011 may be blocked as well, it won’t prevent Monitor Agent from collecting and reporting historical data.

Solution

Hi Joseph_Carson,

I resolved this issue today. The Linux guy installed the Linux and AIX agents for monitor solution incorrectly. We then did a manuall install of these agents and they started
reporting back to the Altiris Notification server. Don't know what he did wrong but i can now monitor Linux CenTOS (Red Hat 5.2) and AIX 6.1 successfully.

Thanks for your assistance!
