    Posted Apr 15, 2014 05:49 AM

I was in the process of installing Symantec Desktop Encryption 10.3.1.13100 on a Window 7 Professionale client when a window popped up saying:

"A more recent versione of Symantec Encryption Desktop is already installed. Installation terminated", with a OK button.

Clicking on the OK button didn't terminate the installation process though, it continued with a lot of errors saying the it couldn't write the registry because the registry folder SOFTWARE\PGP Corporation\Common was missing....

I am positive SDE has never, ever been installed on that host before.

The only Symantec product already existing is Symantec VIP. Any known incompatibility with that product?

    Any suggestion?

    Thanks for your help

    Roberto

    Hello Roberto,

Although you are getting the message , it should not hamper the installation process. This issue has been detected with 10.3.2 on Windows 8.1 Update 1. Here is the article for the same

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH216692

Can you let us know the make and model of Windows 7 and if you downgraded Windows 8.1 to WIndows 7?

Please ensure that you have used an administrator account to run the product installer.

The HP model that you have comes with security software.

You'll have to remove these before you can install the PGP software.

Just saw this on a Dell machine and removing the security software solved the issue.

Remove these from the operating system:

    HP Protect Tools Security Manager
    HP Protect Tools Central Management

    Thanks

    Hi Roberto,

In case you are doing the installation via RDP, please ensure to use the console/admin session to avoid "registry shadowing".

Hi Roberto, You are likely facing this issue: A Newer Version of Symantec Encryption Desktop Has Been Detected http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH216692 Please try with 10.3.2 MP1. Rgs, dcats

    Hi dcats,

the wording of the message is different. I get " A more recent version of Symantec Encryption Desktop is already installed. Installation terminated.", while in the article you are referring to the mentioned error is: "A Newer Version of Symantec Encryption Desktop Has Been Detected. To install this version, please uninstall the newer version first."

Further I'm on Win7 Enterprise and Win8.x has never been installed on that host. The article specifically refers to Windows 8.1 Update 1.

I tried with 10.3.2 anyhow, and I got a whole bunch of errors...

Hi Roberto, Do you have the machine firmware with BIOS or UEFI? If it is the last, please check for any security feature that might be enabled and perhaps causing this. Rgs, dcats

BIOS dcats, that's the first thing I checked, even though I seem to remember that when the firmware is UEFI the SDE installs fine, and then it says it cannot encrypt.

With 10.3.2 and later version UEFI is supported on Windows 7 . If you are trying to encrypt with 10.3.1 on Windows 7 (UEFI) then it is not supported. You would need to change the BIOS to Legacy and reinstall the OS in MBR partitioning.

I Understand Vandana, but this host is not UEFI, I'm positive it's BIOS.

    Hello ROberto,

In BIOS only what is the Firmware set to UEFI or Legacy?

If the firmware is set to both, then it's possible the OS could have been installed in UEFI mode. Check the root of the C drive for a C:\Boot folder.  Check the BIOS/EFI setup settings just to be sure. If it is in UEFI or BOTH mode then you may have to reinstall the OS to get it to work again with 10.3.2 (on Windows 7).

Be sure when testing that the build you have is 10.3.2 Build 15337 it was just released middle of April 2014 timeframe. So if the build you have was downloaded earlier than that, then it's not the 10.3.2 MP1 release.  That is the version we fixed the above referenced problem on Windows 8.1. I believe this was an patch that Microsoft pushed out which affected this, it's possible that patch made it on earlier Windows releases too I suppose.

I also don't think that you reported what version of Symantec Encryption Desktop (or PGP Desktop) you have installed previously. Or is this a new install as far as Symantec Encryption is concerned?
