Endpoint Encryption

I have a few old PGP Disk virtual volumes from an old Windows XP machine (about 10 yrs old). I'm running a trial of PGP Desktop 9.9 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8 and trying to mount them. When I do, it says "no secret key found." All I really want to do is mount the old disks and copy over the data. I know the passphrase, but I'm not sure what software I need to do the job. Please advise.

I should add, the Windows machine no longer works and I have attached the drive containing the virtual volumes to my Mac via USB.

It sounds like the virtual disks are encrypted to a public key, and that you do not have the necessary private key for the mounting.  When a virtual disk is encrypted to a public key, there is no way to mount it without having both the private key, and the private key's passphrase.  The default location for the private keyring on your windows machine is

C:\Users\USER\Documents\PGP\secring.skr

 

Hi, thanks for responding. Yes, I found the secring.skr file, but I'm still getting the same message? Is there something I'm supposed to do with the file to make PGP Desktop see it? Double clicking the secring.skr file gives a message that it can't locate the public key. The public key is published, but I've been unble to locate it using the key server seach, even though I can go to the pgp.mit.edu site and look at it myself.

You don't really need to worry about the public key.  I'm not a Mac user, so am not sure how it's build of PGP imports a key.  In Windows, Import can be selected from the File menu, with then setting it to import from your Windows disk's private key ring.

It's no good. When I try to bring the secring.skr file into PGP Desktop (by dragging and dropping into the "master key List" in preferences -- not sure how else to do it , there is no "import" in the file menu), I get a message that says "No PGP Data - Nothing was found to import in the items provided."

I also note that secring.skr is 0 KB in size. Is that normal?

...aaaand I'm guessing if I open secring.skr in textedit, I should see something other than an empty field. Ugh. Looks like I may never get this data.

aha! I got it. I had to talk myself into not caring and then I found the REAL secring.skr. Thanks for your help. All set!
