Move and upgrade SEPM to a new server

  • 1.  Move and upgrade SEPM to a new server

Sorry if this is a frequent question.

I have SEPM 11.0.5002.333 I installed several years ago on a Win 2003 server. The current server is very low on disk space so I can't do an in-place upgrade. I would like to install 12.1.2 on a new Win2008R2 server that has lots of space and migrate all clients to use the new server, then remove SEPM from the old server to free disk space.

I have downloaded most of the 12.1.2 files from fileconnect, but I don't see a "Getting Started" or "Installation Guide". The one I found said "run setup.exe" but that is for CD/DVD media. Or is it tucked away inside one of the downloads?

I would like to know what I'm doing before I install it, but I've looked at many docs and FAQ's but none seem to address my objective above.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

    This KB article should help:

How to move Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager from one machine to another

Once you extract the contents from the ISO file you downloaded, there should be a folder called SEPM. This contains the install for the SEPM. You can run the setup.exe in here.

I trust you also have read this

The only ISO in the 12.1.2 downloads is Symantec_Endpoint_Recovery_Tool_2.0.24_AllWin_EN.iso

The rest are .exe. Maybe self-extracting files? That's my problem, I have to guess. This one looks like it might be it, but its still a guess:

    Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.2_Part1_Installation_EN.exe

Yep, that is it. Run it and it will extract to a directory of your choosing. Than you can proceed from there.

Looking at the first link you gave for moving SEPM, it appears I'll need to do the replication method since the new machine has a different IP and host name. That requires I install the old version of 11 on the new machine first.

My cuirrent version of SEPM is 11.0.5002.333, but the only download I could find on fileconnect was " International English - version 11.0.7 MP3"

How, where can I get a copy of that same version 11.0.5002.333?

You would need to call support so they can get you access to this version as it is quite old and no longer on FileConnect.

How many clients do you need to migrate?

I actually located a saved copy of "Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_11.0.5_AllWin_EN_CD1.zip" and CD2.

I'll bet that is the 11.0.5002.333. Is there a way to make certain of that?

When you extract it, there should be a small text file in there. If you open it, it will give the SEPM and SEP client versions.

How many clients do you have in your network?

    if the count is less.

Install SEPM 12.1 on a new server

follow this document to update communication settings.

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH199124

You can then use autoupgrade feature to update all your clients to 12.1

check the autoupgrade procedure here, covers installaion as well.

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH197426

once you run setup.exe it will ask to run symantec endpoint, if you click on that, it will give you option to install manager.

    Hi

If you have new IP address an Hostname on server then replication is the best method as there would be no orphan clients

    Regards

I have around 60 client PC's. Yes, the new server will have a different IP and hostname.

If you were to simply install a fresh 12.1 RU2 SEPM on new server, you can reconnect your existing clients to the new SEPM with a feature that is new with SEPM RU2.

In the CDW (Client Deployment Wizard), there is a third feature on the first page that lets you "push" a communications package (sylink.xml). Once your older clients are reporting to the new SEPM, you can upgrade them by assigning a 12.1 RU2 package to the group.

    Please review: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH199124

    That's what I would do.

With the new solution are orphans a known problem? If so are orphans easy to resolve?

If you are assigning the new IP address and Hostname to new Server than replication method would be the best.
