Move BackUP Exec to another drive
Updated: 24 May 2010 | 6 comments
Hi,
I need to move BackupExec to another drive as I am running out of space. Is there a way that I can save all my job templates and backup selections so i do not have to redo them all.
Thanks

Hi
Chances are what is taking up a lot of your disk space is your Backup Exec Catalogs. If you move just these, you will free up a lot of drive space while retaining all of your settings.
The best way to do this is the following:

I already have mycatalogs stored on another drive. Is there any way to move templates and backup selections as well.
thanks
Take a look at http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/260054.htm
This is to move the whole installation to a new computer, but a litlle judicious editing ought to make it work to move to a different drive.
If this response answers your concern, please mark it as a "solution"
Honestly, it may be easier to save your job templates and just re-install veritas backup exec.
Re-installing will take about 20mins or less, and then you just import the job definitions you saved.
I dont know how you can be running out of space because of the selection lists, they shouldnt be very big.
Try moving your Windows page file from the C:\ to another drive instead, and deleting all your other temp files.
A good way to see where all your disk space has gone is to use TreeSize Professional, you can get a 30 day demo from http://www.jam-software.com/treesize.
Hi,
In addition to the above reply, please refer to the following technote as an additional information:
- How to move the Backup Exec for Windows NT and Windows 2000 log files (Data Folder) to another location
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/236720.htm
We hope this will help.
Thanks
In most situations, if Backup Exec is taking a lot of space it is because of the catalogs or job logs. The database containing all the job info normally will not get very large. Since you stated that you already moved the catalogs to another drive verify that the C drive catalogs folder is empty. If it isn't, stop all Backup Exec services, move the files in the catalogs directory with .U01 extensions to the new catalog folder location, taking care not to overwrite newer copies of the same files if they exist. Then empty out the old catalogs directory and restart the services. Look for the amount of space taken up by the data directory. If excessive space is being used, I'd recommend following the previous advice to move the Backup Exec data using the technote referenced above. This technote deals with Backup Exec 8.6 and prior but is nearly the same as what is necessary with 9.x and later. Just stop the mssql$bkupexec service when you stop the other Backup Exec services before moving the data to the new location.
