  • 1.  Move from desktop to laptop

    Hello,

I have a user that is currently on a desktop using Windows 7. He needs to be mobile so will be transitioning to a laptop. Is there a way to successfully pickup his existing desktop configured (OS and all) and place on a laptop. If anyone can provide detailed instructions or point me to a KB article that shows how this can be done using GSS 2.5  I would be most appreciative.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

    Regards,

    Desiree

This is not a trivial undertaking, and on the basis that laptops come with the operating system preinstalled and configured with all the right drivers and utilities, would it not be possible to install the required applications that are being used on the desktop machine and copy over the documents that are needed?

The first issue you would need to check is whether the desktop has an OEM version of Windows installed, or a retail version. Many OEM versions are tied to a particular manufacturer's hardware and will not run on another manufacturer's hardware. There are also issues if the two machines do not have the same HAL.

Assuming that you have a retail version of Windows and the two HALS are the same, you would need to use DeployAnywhere to provision the image of the desktop machine with all the necessary drivers for the laptop.

The Ghost documentation is quite comprehensive, so read up on DeployAnywhere then decide whether it would be quicker to just install the necessary software on the laptop.
