I have a Dell Latitude D630 with a drive that has the PGP Whole Disk encryption enabled.  The drive works just fine and it running Windows 7 Profession 32 bit install.  I am considering removing the drive and placing in my Dell Latitude D830 for prospective use.  I know that Windows will detect the new hardware and possible preclude this use.  However, assuming that it recognizes and changes drivers as necessary, will the the PGP WDE block use or access of the drive on startup?  Is the current install tied to the current hardware in some fashion to preclude this move.  I plan to back everything up beforehand anyway, but was interested in what others have experienced under similar circumstances.

If this is the boot disk and is replacing the boot disk in the other computer, I don't think it will be a problem.  If it is a boot disk that is being added to another computer instead of replacing the boot disk, I think there may be a problem because the WDE bootloader belongs on the boot drive, and in the sector to which it was originally placed.

Thanks for your reply.  Sorry I have not gotten back to you sooner.  Unfortunately, I believe your suspicions were incorrect.  When I move the drive as described in the original note, it appears to have the original machine name and some other identifier (key?) imbedded in the encryption process.  As a result it appears to compare the machine name to the new machine name and as they do not match, it will not recognize the encryption phrase.   If I return the drive to the original machine in which the PGP was originally installed, it operates properly.  I am the rightful owner of all of the hardware and PGP license.  There should be a way for me to move my encrypted drive to another laptop to preclude rebuilding the drive.  Is there a way to unencrypt the drive prior to removal from the original machine, and once relocated to re-encrypt the same drive with the same contents and the same PGP license?   Look forward to your or other's input.

Decryption within the original machine should be no problem - just boot and go to the PGP Disk module of PGP Desktop and start it from there.  You should have no difficulty encrypting from another machine with PGP installed.  I don't recall any specifics of the machine components and licensing, but believe there is some relationship there; however, in my experience, there has been no difficulty in removing PGP from one machine and then using the same license when re-installed to another computer.

Before your response I happened to do the same.  I decrypted the drive, installed in the replacement machine and it booted right up.  The drivers have updated and now I just need to re-encrypt the drive.  Thanks for your follow up.  This appears to solve my need.
