Move Mail Security for SMTP to a new server

Hi,

I am running Symantec Mail Security for SMTP version 5.01 patch 200, and I need to reinstall it on to a new server

I know that I can make a complete backup of the MySQL database as per

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-gate.nsf/...

but it says that you shouldn't then use it to move to a new machine, it recommends Screen Shots and use of the EXPORT feature

Would really like to avoid having to screen shot the entire system, and I have been unable to find an export (or an import) feature

So, does anyone know the best way to move it on to a new machine?

Also, is patch 200 the latest and greatest version, I always struggle to find the information online about new releases

many thanks

jk

Hello jk,

Ya know this would be an excellent opportunity to try out the virtual appliance. Your licensing for SMTP5 should allow you to go to this.

I believe all the information about it should be here: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/documentation.jsp?language=english&view=manuals&pid=53991

As far as answering your question, you can do what you are asking, but it wouldn't be highly recommended. You would have to make sure that the box you are going to has the same name and IP information as the box you backed up from.

Let me know if you need more information.
Thanks!

Hello,

If you are running Mail Security for SMTP version 5 as you stated in your first post, the Brightmail 6 license will not work. So it sounds like you may have received an incorrect license.

If you have licensing for SMTP 5, this can usually be transferred to licensing for the Brightmail Gateway virtual edition on ESX or ESXi.

However, if you are actually running Brightmail Message Filter version 6, then no you will not be able to transfer this to a Brightmail Gateway license.

I hope this clears things up a little. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks!
