  • 1.  Move SEP Enterprise Clients to SBE

I know that the downgrade from the SEP Enterprise to SEP SBE is not supported but was wondering about migration of the SEP installed on the client computers.

If I were to purchase the necessary SBE licenses, uninstall the SEP Manager from the server, install SBE (either on the server or use the cloud), would it be able to push out and install the SBE client software without prior removal of the existing SEP client software?

We are using the latest release of SEP but would like to move over to SBE because of the new management features.

SBE should be able to detect and remove previous installs automatically per this KBA:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH215299

But you'll need to verify since not all are supported:

Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition can automatically start the removal process for certain existing Symantec and third-party products. Please note that the automatic removal feature is not supported for all products, but only for the ones that are listed in the following Online Help Topic:

Removing existing antivirus and firewall products

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Symantec community.

Q.If I were to purchase the necessary SBE licenses, uninstall the SEP Manager from the server, install SBE (either on the server or use the cloud), would it be able to push out and install the SBE client software without prior removal of the existing SEP client software?

--> SEP SBE offers a choice of locally-managed or cloud-managed deployments. Both wworks differently. If you planned to install on premises SBE client then need to uninstall Enterprise Client first.

If you planned to migrate EE to SBE.Cloud version then it would be possible to remove existing EE version.

Previously installed other endpoint protection products which can be automatically removed including the following:

    • Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1
    • Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12.1
    • Non-Symantec products

This article assumes that customers have already obtained a valid SEP SBE serial number.

As you mentioned "We are using the latest release of SEP but would like to move over to SBE because of the new management features", could you please specifiy about which features you are referring to.

Enterprise Edition contains all the features and functionality compare to SBE or SBE.cloud, I would not recommend to use SBE/SBE.cloud  version unless it's a business requirement.

While I am actually impressed that Chetan said this:

Enterprise Edition contains all the features and functionality compare to SBE or SBE.cloud, I would not recommend to use SBE/SBE.cloud  version unless it's a business requirement.

I am curious about two things:

    1. What is driving this decision?
    2. How many endpoints are you controlling?

Management of the endpoints is significantly easier in the cloud - simply because the product has reduced functionality.  You can read through my past posts for some of the flaws and design oversights.

Depending on your environment, or any existing problems presented by the Enterprise SEP version you are running, I suggest you seriously reconsider this decision.

The reasons for wanting to go SBE is really off-topic but here goes.

I've installed SEP at multiple locations starting many years ago.  The SBE variant typically was installed at locations that had a requirement for the SMSME component with the Brightmail anti-spam component.

I don't recall the exact reason for this, but some smaller clients ended up with the regular SEP.  Perhaps this was because they had no need for the SMSME part and it was cheaper, or maybe I just ordered the wrong product.

So I have several small clients running SEP "Enterprise" with some of the PCs that are covered being off-site so they aren't easily managed by the SEP manager.  (Just not worth the effort to handle their dymanic public IP, firewall mappings etc.)  Going to the cloud management of SBE in these cases makes it easier to manage those clients because they will be connected to the managment component in the cloud and because I can access the manager more easily than having to VPN to their internal management server.

So the simple answer is:  Simple needs, small clients, SBE should be the better approach.

I said this in my other post but I'll repeat it here.  The "SBE cloud" management feature is exactly the additional feature that SBE has which is not in EE.  These are very small clients (anywhere from 5-15 client PCs) that ended up on the EE path for no particular reason.

I have one, a 5 license user, that I will use as my test for the migration.

We are all licensed on EE and if it works for this one client, then I will purchase SBE licenses for the other EE clients when their EE is up for renewal.

Thanks for the update & it completely makes sense to use SBE.cloud in such requirements.

Previously installed other endpoint protection products which can be automatically removed including the following while pushing out SBE.cloud package on clinet machines.

    • Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1
    • Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12.1
    • Non-Symantec products

Thanks for the detail explanation & it's a right decision to move at SEP.cloud by looking at business requirements.

SBE.cloud client should be able to uninstall already installed client version.
