Hi,

Total how many clients do you have in the network? What's the SEPM vesion?

If you have limited number of clients then I would suggest to go with a fresh install.

If clients count is high the you can go with any of the following option

There are two methods to move Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) from one machine to another:

Method 1 (Not applicable in your scenerio ): if the SEPM server keeps the same IP and host name, you can refer to "Best Practices for Disaster Recovery with the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager"

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag....

Method 2: if the new SEPM server has a different IP and host name, there are two alternatives:

1. Use replication to install a new SEPM and keep the policy the same with old SEPM. See "How to move Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager from one machine to another"

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH104389

Note: Replication is an option, but its better not to go for that. Because if you do replication and remove the old server that is the Primary SEPM , in future if you want to do replication you will not be able to do so.

2. Install a new SEPM, then use the Sylink file to establish communication between the new SEPM and the existing SEP client through sylink replacer tool.

Note : Sylink replacer tool is most commonly used option because it's easy to use.

To upgrade to the latest vesion of SEP you will have to upgrade to SEP 12.1 RU1 then SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1

Probably SEP 12.1 RU2 will be released on 6th of Nov'12. After this release you can directly upgrade/install to SEP 12.1 RU2. It will save you time & efforts.

How to move Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager from one machine to another

Hi

Assuming you need to migrate your old SEPM server to new hardware and also the Hostname and IP address would also be changed.

Recommended or the best way is configure the second new server as a replication partner of the existing one. Then configure the "Management server list to point the clients to the new server. Keep the setup for sometime so that all clients receives the policy and then delete the replication and de-commission the old server. Following method will have no downtime and orphan clients

+1 SameerU

Replication is the easiest way.

The only thing that might be annoying is that you need to create a new MSL on the new SEPM then wait a full replication cycle in order it's getting correctly applied to the old one and then all the clients retrieve this new MSL priority.

It's mentioned on the article that SameerU anyway wink
