  • 1.  Moving/migrating pgpdesktop v10 from old to new Win 7 Pro profile/acct

    Posted Aug 18, 2012 12:13 PM

Due to corruption and/or misconfiguration within my old user profile/account running on home laptop under Win 7 Pro, am moving/migrating my applications (including PGPDesktop v10) and related data from my old Windows profile/account to my new one (with both user account folders located within c:\Users on the laptop).

So, before starting this, am interested to know the general approach and steps that I should take in order accomplish the move from old to new profile without causing new problems.  Both profiles are currently configured with administrator privileges on my home laptop (Sony VAIO VPCF120FD), and I can run user sessions under either profile (old or new).

Helpful suggestions, tips and referrals to usefule reference material on this general scenario much appreciated.  Thanks.

I've not done this for a User to another User account on the same machine.  However, it seems like you may be able to just copy the following folders from the existing user to the new user:

    C:\Users\USER\Documents\PGP

    C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\PGP Corporation

and then run PGP Desktop, which might launch a dialog for configuring PGP.  This would seem less likely to work if when you installed PGP, you selected the option of only making PGP available for your then existing user account.

It sounds like an uninstall and new install from the new user account might be best.  On the new install, it will ask if you have existing keyrings to use.  If you indicate you do, it will then volunteer to copy your existing keyrings to the default location, but you will need to have them in a location accessable to the new user account.  You should also make sure you have your licensing information available, and will most likely have to reset PGP Options as you desire, and let PGP again recreate messaging services for you.

After creating the new profile (oldprofilename) I copied both folders, as well my pgp keys, to the new graybeard profile.  Unfortunately, when I fired up pgpdesktop, the application couldn't find my keys, even though the configuration for location of keys within pgpdesktop look right (as was pointing to folder in new profile wherein I'd copied my key files from old profile under Win7 Pro).

So I had a look in the PGPprefs.xml file, and I found a line that looks like its pointing to my old profile (n/o graywood), as highlighted in bold below.  So that makes me wonder if I should be doing an uninstall of pgpdesktop within the old profile (that still largely works), and doing a fresh reinstall under the new profile.

Any helpful suggestions much appreciated, as I really don't want to have to rebuild the whole machine:>

    TIA
