The client is running XP SP2.

I notice many instructions say to clean viruses from the client all you have to do is simply boot into Safe Mode and then do a full scan from there.
I decided to test it and I found that doesn't work with those instructions.

Besides the service not running error mentioned in other posts, it has more problems.

I clicked NO to get past the service is not running error and the GUI came up, but now "Scan For Threats" is grayed out, so it is still unsusable.

How do you make it work when booted into Safe Mode?

Can you try it on any other system because it has worked for me mant times.:)

That is not the solution since I had already tried clicking NO to the service warning message. (However, that should still be fixed since that message wastes troubleshooting time for people who don't try clicking NO.  A better worded message would help.)

What I found is that the machine I used to test had failed to upgrade the client version and still had MR2 client on it.
After I upgraded it to MR4MP4, the scan worked, but with the same warning message.

So, apparently older versions of the client cannot scan in Safe Mode.

Good to hear you found a solution, but MR4 MP4? There is no such version in SEP 11. Can you doublecheck that version?

Yes in few odd cases the Scan use to fail in safe mode on MR2 version.

You should be able to right click in the windows explorer and select scan for viruses in safe mode. We also run into the service not running issue if we try and run the application, but teh scan from windows does seem to work well.

You should also be able to run Safe Mode with Networking and do a FULL system scan without getting any error messages about the services...
