I am hearing the first week of September for release of MR5. I am looking into what will be included in this release.
I will report back here when i have new information.
Also as a heads up to all that are looking forward to this release, we will be changing the naming convention for the next release from MR5 to RU5. All releases forward will also carry the RU# convention. So if you log in to fileconnect after release and see RU5 as opposed to MR5, there is no cause for alarm.
of more concern to me is what will be the changes or enhancements. I realize any date would be very tenative at this point. So jus general was what i was hoping for early Sept, late Sept etc.
Seems like MS expired the API a little earlier than they promised - "As a result, the grace period will begin expiring in September 2009, 18 months after Windows Vista SP1 was released on the Microsoft Download Center in March 2008."
Not quite September yet! I first noticed this on an early build of Windows 7 and our SEP client.
We plan on fixing it in our MR5 client, which will RTM in September (I believe its actually fixed in the code now, I just need to get a later build to test)

In one of the forums I was reading that in MR5 there will be some changes how GUP and location policies work? We are just deploying to about 10,000 clients throughout 25 remotes sites. Should I wait for MR5 to complete our policies and GUP assignments?
RU stands for Russia.
Does this mean development has been moved to Russia, like Cisco does some of their security coding in Israel?
A URL or other string with RU flags it as Russian.
Just wondering! ;-)
I seem to remember reading somewhere there were going to be improvements to the GUP's That intrests me as to what to expect since I use them in every office to deploy out my definitions in the field offices thus saving wan bandwidth.
Any one able to shed some light on if or what to expect
Personally I always found the MR MP thingy confusing, so this is a welcome change unless MP becomes RP.<<
Actually, release and patch have worked for me. The MR, or just release in my mind, means it's a release version.
However, releases get patched, so MP, or "patch" makes sense.
I compare it to other company's versioning
You have the major version, say 11, then you have a new release of version 11, say 11.5, then you need to patch it, with a minor patch, not a reinstall, so 11.5.30 for example.
Version 11
Release 5 of Version 11
Then they patch release 5 and the patch is number 30
11.5.30
Now the RU is going to totally confuse me, what's a roll-up?
I know what versions, releases and patches are, what's a RU?
Any thoughts on Ubuntu? We're moving a number of server functions to Ubuntu (we're sick of the massive overhead just for a Windows server)
Our print services, monitoring services, etc. will be Ubuntu.
And what about eventual support for PTP on server should we CHOOSE to run it on certain servers?
SAV for Linux is available for Ubuntu (I have it installed on my 8.04 test machine). The version currently shipping with SEP is 1.0.7 (I believe). 1.0.8 was just released.
I'm hoping that they eventually fix/speed the console. put all policies in the same tab, and fix the really lame reporting...... (and speed issues)
The MHT file attachments can't make it through a lot of modern email, including OWA (security issues, Symantec!) and the emails themselves should include the info in the body of the message like the old Intel alert system did.
Althought I don't use a blackberry (too complex, don't need all that extra technology) I agree with his thoughts.
You hit the nail on the head my problems with the alerting. As typically happens most of my alerts come when I am going between work and home or in a meeting. If I could read the email on my blackberry I could dispatch the right people out via a phone call as I am going down the interstate. other wise it has to wait until I get home.
Many corporate administrators are now working with the Windows 7 RTM. I'm sure I speak for more than myself when I ask for the opportunity to examine the SEP 11 RU5 beta.
Edit: In the Twitter Endpoint Protection thread people appear to be invited to join the SEP 11 RU5 beta. I should like to be invited to participate in the SEP 11 RU5 beta.
The Symantec Enterprise External Test Program is now accepting applications from all Symantec customers who need malware protection on their pre-released versions of Microsoft Windows 7.
With the old undependable AMS now completely gone we are looking at new ways to generate help desk tickets for virus alerts. An email scrape is an option however, when the text of the virus alert is in an attachment versus a plain text message body, that becomes impossible.
If there is a vote, cast mine for all plain text .
Actually, I found AMS very reliable! I rarely had problems with it, loved the alerts, and loved the ability to include as much or as little as I wanted, including file PATHS, full paths, with names, etc.
I could then use Outlook rules to sort and filter messages into folders, forward them, etc.
AMS was good and I'd gladly accept back a version of it.
I've been subscribed to everything possible for months, even years for some of it - and I get pretty much nothing. I've never ever ever not once been "alerted" to any updates for SAV or SEP, not a single time. I have tried to get updates sent to me, no mail, letters, email, nothing. I have often gone weeks then finally gone to the file area and dug myself to see if anything is "new" - often finding something was released or updated a month ago - the subscription to these notices doesn't work, for some reason.
There has to be a better way for paying customers to find out when software is upgraded or updated. We can't be surfing the web all day every day "is there anything new today?" We need to get an email stating "xxx was just releasted today, go here for the update" or sometyhing like that.
Any way to find out WHY I get no notices? We've used SAV, then SEP here forever, GOVERNMENT purchases. I know we're small and don't spend a lot with Symantec, but for us it's a large part of our IT budget. I've not gotten anything from Symantec in so long I can't remember the last anything.
Thanks for informing us about this issue. I have notified the PM for the SEP product of this problem,
and we will get to the bottom of this ASAP. Stay tuned for updates.
IF I need to "re-subscribe" so be it, but I've subscribed using a couple links I was pointed to only to find out I'm already subscribed. I'd never know it, though, since I get no indication...........
I've been waiting with bated breath (or is it baited breath? One is to do with eating worms, I think) for the next release.
Granted, platinum folks will know and recive first, but it's like - with all the products we deal with and support here at IVRS, it's just not possible to surf the web daily to see what's new.........
Symantec used to have a product years ago, back in the 90's, that looked for updated to products and hardware on your computer, as I recall.
Man, that product lived too short a life!
I think this falls into feature request teritory, but in the SMSMSE consol it shows the installed version and the currently available version. This would seem to be a wise addition to the SEPM consol.
I too am on the alert list (with two addresses), and to say it is sporatic at best would be too kind. It would seem only full version notifications go out reliabaly.
I believe early September was a stated goal for MP5 (or RU5) - give it a day or two and we will be beyond early September and heading into mid September....
Nick , we can't promise a date as yet as it has not been decided. The realese was due in early sep , but it has been delayed . It should be releasesd by the end of the month.
Any chance of getting a partial list of some of the changes or fixs. I know we keep hearing that GUP's with have some major changes but what does that mean?
WOW - bleeding edge. Do you do ANY testing of the final released OS and training for users before deploying? Or is it read, fire, aim?
There's simply NO way we'll deploy a brand new untested OS - and please don't say "it's tested" because beta and RC are not the final product. There's almost always a difference between the final RC and what you actually get. Sometimes fatal..........
IT will be a few months before we've done REAL testing, know it's REALLY stable, and may even wait for the first SP - which we typically do before deployment.
Let others suffer the pain while we watch them struggle and do the work for us, then we deploy a stable, known and patched product.
Our rule, never deploy version 1.0 of anything.
Well, I won't argue with you about that. I just don't share your opinion. BUT, fact is that Windows 7 RTM have been released to volume customers now for almost a month.
That's true - but that's just a month, so few have REALLY put it through its paces, REALLY tested the actual final for-sure, for-real, this is it product.
I'd suggest, and this is a "please" / "suggestion" - test it well! Don't be too anxious - those that were with Vista got burned BADLY. The 4 or 5 Vista computers we have here are nothing but trouble - and they are used by IT staff who curse them daily. We were lucky - we didn't roll with Vista, we rolled around it.
Maybe things are different there, but we're a SMALL IT shop for the agency we support and we just don't have the staff to answer all the questions ("I can't find this, I can't figure out how to do that, my menu is gone" and so on) or to support all the "I can't get this to work" "it keeps crashing" issues.
There will be as many "how do I" questions as there are "it's broke" calls. MAYBE not so bad for shops already on VISTA who need to get off VISTA ASAP! LOL
If you are on Vista - Windows 7 may be your fix! ;-)
actually as long as you just install av and antispyware its pretty stable. I had issues when I tried to do a full install but once I scaled it back everything worked fine.
So, if they out SEP for Windows 7 before GA date, I'm more than happy!
A Virus Scanner is not just a crappy other APP, which just uses .NET Framework and just "works" on new OS Version.
Virus Scanning is deeply integrated into the OS, and just needs more attention to port to a new version than other apps.
I have been fooling around with win7 since rc. When it became availble to volume customers I stared using RTM last week I switched to using it full time instead of on a test machine. I have had only one issue and that is more of a 64 bit issue than a win 7 issue. (i switched from 32 to 64 bit at the same time to start testing that idea). I have on app that can not run in 64 bit currently but they have a new build do soon that will fix it. Once Symantec gets RU5 out then we are going to get IT to start loading it up on their machines so people can test more.
I am also planning to switch from Vista x86 to Win7x64 on my own notebook, because I think that now the era of 64-bit workstations have really begun, due to most workstations now come with 4GB memory.
We're seeing more issues with "64 bit" than with OSs in general.
Even Server2008 we are NOT at all impressed with 64bit!
32 is FASTER, more stable, more reliable, things just work. 64bit introduces a whole new set of problems, apps that won't install or work, and it's SLOWER. We've thrown a full 4 gig at it and it's still at least 20% slower than 32bit 2003.
Vista 64bit is a real pooch compared to 32bit XP.
MAYBE it's not the OS so much as MS's implimentation of 64bit?
64 bit introduces some issues. Mainly on the drive side or anything that ties tightly to the kernel. The issue has to do with how differently drivers are handled in 64 bit the new archetecure does make the system faster and give it better handleing of memory and access to the bus. I have been compairing 32 and 64 bit side by side and notice better performance from the 64 bit. One of the biggest advantages is that a driver can not ingect its self into the kernel and has to use API's instead. This prevents a poorly writen driver from slowing the system down.
I've had great luck with both Vista 64-bit and Win7 64-bit. Currently running MR4 MP2 on a handful of 64-bit platforms (Antivirus and Antispyware only) in both managed and unmanaged environments without issue. I have to admit, Win7 is clearly the faster of the two OS's, but honestly the 64 vs. 32 bit implementations of each respective OS are farily comparable. The only real difference is OS to OS, not 64 vs. 32.
I've been using Win7 since RC and have been using RTM 64 bit since released to TechNet subscribers (August). This is on a Lenovo T60 dual core 2.0 Ghz laptop that previously had Vista 32 bit. The performance increase is unbelievable. It used to take several minutes to boot up in Vista (SP1 did speed things up), but now, my laptop is incredibly fast and responsive.
We too bypassed Vista for regular users and only our IT staff had it. Once Windows 7 became available, we upgraded and never looked back. The only thing I'm waiting for is SEP application and device control for 64 bit OS. Once that's available, I have no problems rolling out Windows 7 to my users.
For who? The platinum and huge corporate conglomerates, or the rest of us?
Seems we are always at least a week after everyone else............It's been that way for every single release for the past couple of years anyway. It's released, platinum gets it, a few others, then finally a few days later, we get it.
We've been needing this for a long time, in fact some internal support there was attempting to get us the beta to solve our severe issues here, but they didn't have any luck.
It's not just a "we'd like it" - it's a "support recommended it to us" to solve some really nasty stuff going on - like for example, the loss of any word documents folks attempt to save to the server.......
Sort of like the doctor gives you a perscription - "here, this will make you feel better and be able to go back to work" but the pharmacy he uses can't fill it.
No it won't, that's not how it works. We typically had to wait a few days, unless they do this release differently, trust me, this agency won't see it before at least the end of next week.
I know from over a year of experience. File connect shows different things depending on your serial/license. Just because it's there does NOT mean I can get it. We're not even up to Joe Average level - our license didn't let me get the last release for several days, even after others here had it installed and working.
Trust me on this. I'm not lying.
Also, our support person tried to get me the beta and could not.......
I don't have time to spend hours and hours "looking for things" - they need to send support persons and LONG TIME customers some sort of alert. I do have a job and must do it to keep getting checks.
It's like almost everything else - I don't even get notices of new releases and have to spend hours here to find out anything new.
Customer since about 1992, and I have to beg for info, search and dig and find out accidentally that there's a new release coming.
Not all IT people have the time to surf the web reading forums all day to get this info.
Symantec should have an email that goes out to customers telling them of new or upcoming releases.
I did beta testing for them for MANY MANY years, starting about 1992 up through the turn of the century, many dozens of products and releases from pcAnywhere to Norton Utilities to NAV to SAV to SAV CE to WinFAX to their defunct Win95 backup product, you name it, I was a beta tester, for a while probably among their most prolific.
Apparently I'm no longer on that list because I got too busy to do much testing.
I don't get alerts for beta tests, I don't get alerts for new releases or patches or fixes for SEP, instead I have to surf the web and get lucky to see this stuff, and it puts me behind doing the work I actually get paid to do...........what buys my food, pays for the house and keeps me in toys.
Other software I have I'm constantly getting notices of new releases, fixes, beta alerts, etc. RAXCO's PerfectDisk for example, I get constant email from them on that sort of thing. So I don't need to visit their web site unless I've gotten an update notice, etc. It's a good model for VERY busy IT people............
I won't argue with you here - You're absolutely correct.
Maybe things change and get better when they more and more start using the Forum capabilities (e.g. Trusted Advisor's Groups).
And someone alreade promised to look into that broken notification system.
I signed up a week ago, I even got some confirmation e-mails and things
(Did you follow the instructions in the confirmation e-mail? you have to send it back to get confirmed on the list)
I'm really looking forward if there will be an announcement on this list or not :)
Yeah, I've signed up for everything I could get my hands on. The one and only thing I ever hear is an occasional message that IPS signature updates will be released. That's it, it's supposed to be some sort of a newsletter or something but only ever contains one bit of info.
I believe i've signed up at least three times in the last 4 years and still get nothing but a couple times a year about the IPS updates.
Today is the third time I'm signing up for this email bulletin for Antivirus or EndPoint and I have never received an email from this subscription. Does this subscription actually work?
It is happy to hear that RU 5 is getting released on Monday. Whether it will be available to download for every one or as ShadowsPapa said it will be only for platinum users on Monday?
Please don't forget to mark your thread solved with whatever answer helped you : ) Thanks & Regards Aravind
LOL - they are also a WEST COAST USA company, but seems much of their "servers" and other work don't reside in the states.
Labor costs too high here................
It's about 7:30am here, that makes it what, 5:30am there, so you have a few hours to go.
Also keep in mind - that wasn't a promise!
For us, it's reached emergency status - it's a "MUST HAVE IT TODAY" item............we have some very rare side effects from SEP - things they are aware of, but are uncommon.
Guessing that they work west coast time. I am betting we will see the code posted this afternoon for the east coast time. Hopefully soon I am hoping to do the upgrade this week.

How about a list of what to anticipate from it
Any chance of getting a partial list of some of the changes or fixs. I know we keep hearing that GUP's with have some major changes but what does that mean?

I will post here when I have a firm release date and time.

Most Probably this ...
I would bet on this Friday as well Rick.... looking at the history of releasing updates around the middle of the month. :) :)
I _hope_ for a release today,
I _hope_ for a release today, since this update is holding me back from deploying Win7 in our organization. Symantec, PLEASE hurry up....
WOW - bleeding edge. Do you
WOW - bleeding edge.

Well, I won't argue with you
Well, I won't argue with you about that. I just don't share your opinion. BUT, fact is that Windows 7 RTM have been released to volume customers now for almost a month.
That's true - but that's just
That's true - but that's just a month, so few have REALLY put it through its paces, REALLY tested the actual final for-sure, for-real, this is it product.
LOL
If you are on Vista - Windows 7 may be your fix! ;-)

I agree with you UlrikJPS, in the way that Windows 7 is "ready" for deployment. Been using it for months (including the RTM since release on August xxth).
However, I totally understand that 3rd party companies need time to adopt and test their products on a new platform.
And no, Volume Licensing has just opened up two Weeks ago: http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/business/archive/2009/09/01/windows-7-volume-license-and-trial-availability.aspx
And GA is still a month away...

Win 7 definatly ready
I have been fooling around with win7 since rc. When it became availble to volume customers I stared using RTM last week I switched to using it full time instead of on a test machine. I have had only one issue and that is more of a 64 bit issue than a win 7 issue. (i switched from 32 to 64 bit at the same time to start testing that idea). I have on app that can not run in 64 bit currently but they have a new build do soon that will fix it. Once Symantec gets RU5 out then we are going to get IT to start loading it up on their machines so people can test more.
I am also planning to switch
I am also planning to switch from Vista x86 to Win7x64 on my own notebook, because I think that now the era of 64-bit workstations have really begun, due to most workstations now come with 4GB memory.
We're seeing more issues with
We're seeing more issues with "64 bit" than with OSs in general.

64 bit
64 bit introduces some issues. Mainly on the drive side or anything that ties tightly to the kernel. The issue has to do with how differently drivers are handled in 64 bit the new archetecure does make the system faster and give it better handleing of memory and access to the bus. I have been compairing 32 and 64 bit side by side and notice better performance from the 64 bit. One of the biggest advantages is that a driver can not ingect its self into the kernel and has to use API's instead. This prevents a poorly writen driver from slowing the system down.
I've had great luck with both
I've had great luck with both Vista 64-bit and Win7 64-bit. 32.

I've been using Win7 since RC

For who? The platinum and

No it won't,
that's not how it works.

I don't have time to spend

Yeah, I've signed up for everything I could get my hands on. The one and only thing I ever hear is an occasional message that IPS signature updates will be released. That's it, it's supposed to be some sort of a newsletter or something but only ever contains one bit of info.
