msi****.tmp process - taking 50% of cpu

Hello all,

This is an issue we have come across intermittently in our environment. When there is no push or anything installing, on some desktops we have seen an msi****.tmp (where the **** stand for a 4 random characters, different per machine) windows process under task manager running constantly and taking 50% of the cpu on some desktops. i used Windows Process Explorer and traced it back to an Altiris process with the parent process being msiexec.exe. I know of course that msiexec.exe is the windows installer. Once you kill the parent it doesn't come back. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? I have no idea what is causing this, all of our jobs seem to work great and like I said no current push is taking place on the machines that have this problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

What is the name of the Altiris process?

Thanks for the fast reply

an example is:

MSIDAD0.tmp

On the machines I encounter this on, the 4 characters are always random. When I follow this process in process explorer:

Under MSIDAD0.tmp:5592 Properties: - I see Altiris under the "strings" tab

Under MSIDAD0.tmp properties - I see Altiris under the version tab

please take a look at the screenshots in the .doc file i am attaching.

I see that you have the NS agent running, is there an agent install task (or any other task) running when this happens?

No, there is no scheduled jobs or installs running on any of the boxes that have the issue. The process never ends until it is killed. Here is a list of processes running on a box that has the issue, if this helps. In this case the process is "MSI24E9.tmp" thanks

We are now experiencing this in our environment. (Approximately 25 computers are affected out of 800). As far as I can tell this started today, and on a few machines, the issue has subsided, leaving me to believe this is a task of some sort, but I have had issues tracking it down. Attached is the MSI***.tmp file I pulled out of the windows\installers folder.

**EDIT**

The attach file will not function (multiple connections and computers tested). Please email me at tom.renkert@asc.asrc.com and I will send a copy.

Hi Tom,

Did you zip the file?

No luck via zipping the file either. The progress bar races to complete with a java message and nothing attaches.
