  • 1.  MTA Service doesn't come up after reboot

    Posted Dec 04, 2008 03:10 AM

Most of the time the MTA Service doesn't come up after a server restart. Starting manually works without issues.

I got the Error "Failed to connect to firewall channel" many times in the log during system Startup. I'm using Simantec Mail Security For SMTP Version 5.0.1 build 189.

The Server Stands in a DMZ and is used as a Mailgateway.

Mine does the same.  When I open the gui, i just click on hosts, then on home page and it has started.  Also have many firewall channel errors.  Some timing issue.  these errors stop once the services have all started.  I guess I have just accepted that it does that, does not seem to cause any problem.

    Hello,

So we have seen this on occasion caused by insufficient memory on the server to be able to handle the mail throughput and/or program load. Other than that it is difficult to say. I could see this causing the service startup issues as well. The reason for this is because we can have timing issues when starting our services, and since there are dependencies with our services they wont start unless the dependent services are up.

Second to that, I would check to make sure that we are not having any permissions problems.

My personal recommendation would be to see about migrating to the Symantec Brightmail Gateway Virtual edition. I understand this may not be possible at this time, but I would highly suggest at least taking a look at going this direction.

    Hope this helps!

    Tom

Insufficient isn't the Issue in this case I've got 4GB of memory. The Computer uses about 1GB after reboot. I guess we will just have to check carefully if all Services are up after each reboot. It's good practice anyway.

    Thanks for your help

You should be fine on resources then. Most likely what you are seeing is the timing issues I was talking about. If one of the services take too long to come up it can cause issues with the other dependent services. Sorry for the inconvenience. If I can figure anything else out I'll post later.

    Thanks!
