Multi subnet Deployment Server
Hey guys,
I am in the middle of building out a deployment server for a roll out of about 75 new vista machines. I have run into a few roadblacks so far but this site has helped me get past most of them. The problem I am having now is with trying to create an image of a system while on a different subnet from the actual deployment server.
Here is a little background to the network setup.
Three different sites connected by multiple T1s. Each site has a dhcp server and a seperate pxe/file server. All three sites are different subnets (10.100.4.X, 10.100.6.X, and 10.100.11.X). It is possible to ping and share files accross all three networks with no problems. We are using a DOS boot image in text mode to image systems. It works flawlessly from the site with the deployment server.
The pxe servers are all managed by the deployment/pxe server on 10.100.4.x network. If I attempt an image of a system on this network every thing works very nicely.
If I move to another location and create a job telling the system to save the image to the file server at the same location I run into problems. PXE seems to work because I get a response from the PXE server at the correct site and it even acts like it is going to work, downloads from mtftp, but then when contacting the Deployment server it hangs forever and then eventually fails. I have all of the mapped drives, PXE server, and the deployment server in the LMHOSTS file.
Basically what all needs to be running on the remote subnet for it to all work correctly. Is there another service besides PXE that needs to run?
I will follow up with more information shortly, once I get back onsite.
Thank you
Follow up:
The problem more specifically is that it gets to:
Altiris pre-select Automation processing
UD 10.100.6.11 ....
The says Could not locate boot server or something close to it.
Now if I pause it at UD 10.100.6.11 for a couple seconds, it then continuues on but takes a long time to download the DOS boot diskette. It is like it is pulling accross the WAN but on the boot image I only have the xpress share and the file share to save the image once created mapped.
Any thoughts?
Thank you again.
Multi subnet Deployment Server
Hi Rordo,
Launch the PXE tool to create multiple boot images for each of your pxe servers.
What you need to do is create on Managed dos boot disk and 3 local dos boot images on each of your individual pxe servers. (all from the pxe tool)
Once you have done that you must redirect each of your local boot images to the shared dos boot image.
Then in your image deployment task select the dos shared boot image. Deployment console will then redirect the machines in different subnets to there local pxe server, there by getting the boot image from the local pxe at LAN Speed.
Regards,
Nick
