Multicard Template for Added PCI-E NIC Broadcom 5721Ci Trouble
Problem:
The multicard template indicates it has the "Embedded Broadcom NetXtreme 5721 PCI-E Gigabit NIC" as an option but when I try to boot with the multicard template it doesn't 'find' it and says 'Unable to find Network Card'. Secondary is if I make a boot flash drive with just the "Embedded Broadcom NetXtreme 5721 PCI-E Gigabit NIC" w/o using the multicard template I can boot and image to the PC.
Reason:
The reason we have added NICs is the incompatability with Intel's 825xx series and the Cisco 3500XL switch that we run in over half of our operations at this time. (NOTE: this issue is not related to the Cisco 3550 series switches). Dell kindly drop shipped us 22 NIC addon cards after we pressed the issue with them.
I'm perplexed on this as I follow the walkthrough on how to add a card to a multicard template as indicated here ( http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/on-technology.nsf/docid/2000091914073125 ). This process has worked flawlessly for me in the past.
Additional Notes:
Using GSS 8.3.0.1331
I am setting up the template using the NDIS2 setup tool inside of the Ghost Boot Wizard. Again, used it before without any trouble.
I have also modified the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost\Template\Embedded Broadcom NetXtreme 5721 PCI-E Gigabit NIC\mcassist.cfg file to read the following -
==========
# This file is used by the Ghost Boot Wizard.
# You should not attempt to edit this file yourself
DRIVER-TYPE = NDIS
DRIVER-NAME = B57.dos
NDIS-NAME = B57$
RECEIVE-MODE = 0
DISPLAY = YES
TIMESTAMP = 1180713064
PCI-TAG = 14e4 165e : Embedded Broadcom NetXtreme 5721 PCI-E Gigabit NIC
===========
I'm just not sure why it will work individually but not in the multicard template.
Comments
I still can't get the multicard Template to work on this driver - but I can make a boot usb device that works fine with just that driver independantly.
Is there a restriction somewhere that I'm missing?
Thanks in advance.
Techone, looking at the PCI-TAG line in yours compared to the PCI-TAG line in the other mcassist.cfg files that are found in the multicard list, yours does not end with a $ sign. Try adding a $-sign to the very end of your PCI-TAG line and see if it works.. good luck!
Thanks for taking an interest in this thread - I have reviewed the mcassist.cfg file and found that the PCI-TAG is the following:
PCI-TAG = 14E4 165E : Embedded Broadcom NetXtreme 5721 PCI-E Gigabit NIC$
I guess I didn't copy the $ before.
It sounded too simple. I am on a quest to build (add to the) a multicard template for all of our school district's PCs and laptops (mostly Dells, IBM/Lenovos). After reading your post I am afraid I will not have too much luck in getting a 100% working template. Pressing on! Good luck.
Best of luck -
I deal with strickly Dell although you'll find strange things that show up. Imcompatabillity for instance with Cisco 3500 switches and the Intel 825xx NIC which I went round and round with Dell for a few months on. I hope to find my answer soon as well although I do have a workaround I just like having everything bootable through 1 usb stick/configuration.
While building my PCI-TAG files I have become familiar with "NIC NAME" and I think it has to be exact and a DEV can be listed twice with different names(???). But, I assume you got the name from the Device Manager so what you had should be correct and working.
However, using the VEN and DEV from your post I find and would try all of these lines in the MCAssist.cfg :
PCI-TAG = 14E4 165E : Embedded Broadcom NetXtreme 5721 PCI-E Gigabit NIC$
PCI-TAG = 14E4 165E : Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet$
PCI-TAG = 14E4 165E : Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller$
These are some NIC Names that I have found in several different b57win32.inf files downloaded as part of broadcom driver packages from different specific machines (D531, Optiplex330 ect.) from dell.
Thanks - I really don't think this matters. I did a Intel 825xx and named it "825xx 755 driver" and it still worked. I will give it a go anyways in just an off chance it's only related to Broadcom. I appreciate your input on this thread - been a pleasure working with you thus far.
