 IN MULTIPLE GUP ENVIRONMENT(SEPMR5)

IF I DESIGNATE 3 PC ARE AS GUP OUT OF 15

same time whole 3 will connect to server for virus defintion same time
OR wait for 1st GUP-1 if GUP-1 host PC online and taking update

GUP-2 & GUP-3 same time connect to server for updates(def) or contact first to GUP-1 if gup-1 online

its basically client that

its basically client that starts talking to GUP, if the definitions are not present in the connected GUP then GUP will request to SEPM for definition.

Hence it is based on client request to GUP.

i have 3 GUP means whole 3

i have 3 GUP means whole 3 GUP COME TO MAIN LOCATION AND CONTACT ANTIVIRUS FOR UPDATE
or 2/3 or wait for 1st GUP-1 IF GUP-1 IS CONNECTED AND TAKING UPDATES

it should be updating all

it should be updating all three.

consider the client getting updates from SEPM, it is definetly not one at a time. So based on this assumption, I'm saying all the three GUP will get updates from SEPM if it is requesting for.

means same time if all 3 GUP

means same time if all 3 GUP COME ONLINE AS BRANCH ONLINE

ALL 3 gup connect to server for update

means link slow issue for 3 GUP from same online for asking updates

there must be option gup2/3 or GUP must talk to one-another-34d for asking which update they have or taking updates so later they will collect from that updated GUP

well its not like all GUP

well its not like all GUP coming online. I was referring to when all the GUP's contact SEPm for definition update at the same time.

As mentioned the GUP will check with SEPM based on SEP client request ( assuming GUP does not save the required definition).

means there is no mechanism

means there is no mechanism that

all GUP should talk to each for asking online and having updates rather than server
or is any of the GUP taking update other two sould wait ?

because if 3 of the designated GUP contact to server as all three asking for latest update(def) then link may cause slow

But that scenario is the

But that scenario is the exception. Most of the time, the GUP will exist alone in smaller offices. And if you had them attempt to "talk to" each other, as in our case, they'd have to come back to the main office, then back out to get to other GUPs in other offices, whilst if they all simply hit the SEM servers...... and no, they won't all hit the SEM server at the same time anyway, so not a big conceran, IMO, about 2 oer 3 GUP suddenly all deciding to hit the SEM server at the same time for an update. It's almost always going to be offset by some time interval.
What are the odds of having 3 GUP computers in a single office all hit SEM at the exact same time?
Further, knowing how much load either a server or a GUP can handle, I guess I wonder - why have multiple GUP machines in an office - if it's that large, IMO, set up a regular SEM server with its own database then sync the databases.

We've got two SEM servers in Des Moines. We have 30+ field offices. Every field office gets updates, including new packages when new releases come out, from the 2 SEM servers in Des Moines. Never even a blip on the bandwidth use. Most offices are like 10meg or 7meg download speeds (VPN over cable Internet)

I guess I'm suggesting that unless you have huge numbers, you won't see a real issues - especially since the odds are really against all machines hitting a server at one time. The computers are going to not all come online at the exact same instant, and the updates really don't take that long. Symantec has the traffic under control pretty well, IMO...... unfortunately, our agency would know if it was an issue  ;-(    as we have some severe speed issues here (not due to updates, however)

One GUP can not update the

One GUP can not update the other GUPs because its designed to get updates from SEPM, and provide them to other SEP clients.

When you make one machine a GUP, its purpose it to take definitions from SEPM on behalf of others.
