Multiple stream backup

Created: 10 Sep 2012 | 4 comments

Hello

We have some disk based storage that is capable of 6 streams to it. For our agent based backups this works well as there is one job per server, and the rest just queue up.

My question is how do I do this for Virtual Center, since all the VM's are under one server. I noticed that it backs up the virtual machines sequentually, is there a way to backup multiple VM's in parallel without creating on job per VM?

You can create streams in Netbackup but not in Backup Exec.

No.

Do note that doing things in parallel does not always mean that things will go faster.  There will be resource contention on the VM host and the media server.

Hi pkh

I do understand this, but I would like to do it for a few reasons.

1) Network. The backup server is connected via LACP, and you need different streams to realise the full bandwidth of the trunk.

2) Multiple hosts. We would be connecting to more than one host, which connects to more than one SAN node so we would be able to obtain full network speeds from each host.

I will see about submitting a feature request, but in the mean time it might mean that I split the job into 3 seperate jobs this shouldn't be too much administrative overhead.

Your point of contention would be the media server itself.  You got to "play" around with the number of jobs to find the optimum.  Who knows, you might be able to have more jobs or on the other hand, you might find that the single job is still the best.

I have written some articles on how to handle multiple job, chaining them, etc.  You might want to take a look at those.
