My E-Mail Address Was Hi-Jacked! How to Correct It?

Hi, I recently learned from my friends that someone used my e-mail address to send my friends spam mails (selling products, inserted a URL link to their own site).
This is embarrassing! I wonder if my friends would think I am the one actually sending them the spam mails!
I actually had Norton 2009 software loaded on my computer but it still happened!
How can I take care of this and reverse this? Would someone please help if you had experienced this?

My e-mail was hacked into by someone.
I was very upset to learn that someone named Gabby hacked into my e-mail and was using my name to send disgusting messages to my friends. How do I erase this person from my computer and keep them from getting into it again? I'm not very computer savvy and I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do. Please contact me if you can help.
